...it's all about survival and reproduction, but it's pretty fascinating!

Unfortunately, this nest is atop a ~20 ft. pole with no way to get a better, more photogenic view. Last year, the pair built it up a lot, with lots of obstructing sticks rendering it pretty much useless for photography. While it's still far from ideal, I think maybe our repeated snow, rain, ice, thaws this winter compressed things a bit.

Anyway, I'm very drawn to the ospreys and fascinated by many of their behaviors. Here they are, doing what they do to ensure a next generation.

Very nice nest's location, Kim. I wish I can see the nest like that in our area. Nice shots.

The first with the big cumulus clouds in the background is quite an establishment image Kim. Fine job with the bird porn

Terrific series, that first shot is awesome and the following mating sequence is very well done.

Morris, Morris, Morris,

Bird porn?!!? The FM Forum Style Manual calls for "mating sequence".

Great series you were able to capture even from a challenging position.

Thanks Bob. I watch these birds quite a bit; I rarely tire of it. One of their behaviors that just amazes me is when they skim the water in flight to clean their talons. No pics of that...yet.

Thank Tam. You're right, it's a great location (State Wildlife Management Area). It has really been something to watch the ospreys add to the nest over the last few years (until I realized they were really "sticking it to me" photographically speaking!

Thank you Morris. That first pic was from one muggy, hot August afternoon a couple summers ago. I could not believe the size of that cloud; looked like all hell was going to break loose!

The pics are a little bird porny but it's a great show of their flight abilities (plus I like that it means there's good likelihood of future generations. Interestingly enough, one of the adults 'disappeared' a could summers ago. Made me wonder if an eagle had its way with it...

Thanks Louie. Though it looked pretty ominous, I loved that first one too (see response to Morris above). That cloud formation was absolutely breathtaking! I think this is one of my better mating sequence captures too (but also the first year I've used the 500 II with the 1.4 III--it definitely helps).

Thanks Frank. Because they've built the nest so high over the past couple years, this time of year, this is about the only action I can see to photograph anymore. I can still sometimes catch them with fish coming in and feeding young but they've definitely limited my options. Still, they are absolutely amazing to watch!

That mating sequence is fascinating. Not the scramble you see with waterfowl, more a 'swing from the chandelier' approach.

[I didn't mean to drag the tone down...]

But what a great opportunity to film these amazing birds - keep us updated, please.

Great photos! I know exactly where this is. Really tough to get photos of them in the nest with my 300mm and 1.4x.
I just wait in the fields to get some good flight shots.

Thanks Mitehit; love your analogy ! I am intrigued with most everything the ospreys do so will continue to check on them through the season. Stay tuned...

Thanks for the kudos, sheine20v! You're right, there's still plenty of good photo-ops even though the nest is quite built up now. Maybe I'll run into you out there one day...
