The heron has caught a snake! And the snake is not happy about it. The heron flew off with its prize so I never found out how it could devour such long prey. But I think this is pretty common and the bird would have had little difficulty.

Snakes, gophers, rats, birds and fish, these guys will eat about anything.
Nice...

The second is terrific Ed.

I've seen cases where the bird caught a rattler or coral snake and the snake bit the bird resulting in both dying.

Interesting, and surprising. I would think that predators would have to be very efficient to be successful as a species. They have to eat all the time. If the prey could turn on them and defeat them even a small percentage of the time, that would spell trouble for their existence.

I suspect it's very unusual for the snakes to win. It's quite surprising how low a kill rate many predators have causing them to survive on the edge of existence.

Now that is a pretty awesome series. It looks like that snake was trying its best to in flick some kind of harm on the GBH but I'm sure the GBH won out in the end. As Morris said, things could turn out differently if the snake were a rattler or coral.

Well done Ed. I have a poor photo similar to yours from several years ago, so I do know it's not uncommon ~ Ron
