Just playing with something of ISO higher than 800 (hand-held) ... jpg + tweaks + crop.

  Canon EOS 80D    EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM +1.4x III lens    560mm    f/11.0    1/320s    1250 ISO    -0.3 EV

This is a classic Kent image!

Kinda reminds me of your Cattail and vine image.

If you hadn't of said this was handheld and high ISO I wouldn't of guessed it. At 560mm on a cropper I'd say you have steel in those arms.

Thanks Dave ... no steel here, just some rusty hinges.

Cool to hear you recall the cattail & vine. I was thinking of it when shooting this one too ... such opposing perspectives how this one "digs in" to attach itself, yet not touch the cattail.

I hear that! Cept my rusty hinges don't help me much.

Curious why you always seem to shoot jpeg's? I know you once said you usually shoot RAW+jpeg but I've noticed you almost always post the edited jpeg?

I work on my laptop ... my posted jpgs are my draft workups, not final pieces.

That and I set my camera jpeg settings a bit "unfinished" @ lowish sharpening, contrast, saturation, so I've got some headroom to work with for pp.

Of course, I shoot raw + jpg, so I've got my raw files in my hip pocket for heavy cropping or to work for prints or those really challenging tones, etc. When the jpg isn't up to the task.

I've spent so much time reworking small jpgs for others that I am pretty comfortable working my jpgs for our use here.

Hopefully that makes a little sense.

I like the embedded vine, shows the power of slow steady growth. The textures are neat and the shooting skill and PP are superb.

I tried some handheld shots of smaller scenes on my last trip, inspired by you and others, nothing as good as this probably because I have no feel for the genera.

Thanks Ben / Steve.

I think the thing I like best about this one is the little "tentacles" that the vine uses to latch on with. It's almost as though it has a "mind" that it makes conscious decisions ... i.e. "latch here" vs. "not too tight" (cattail reference).

I find it somewhat intriguing and juxtaposing regarding its size / power relationships.

As the eye moves from darker russet textures on the left to prepare to settle on the right, it is stopped pleasantly by a plane breaking vine.

Dig the experiment, dig the execution.

Only nit here is that with the right side getting both the vine and the extra exposure is that the left side might be overlooked by comparison.

Cheers!

Rick / Jeff,

Thanks. I tried to weight / balance the mass, tones and lines to give a bit of yin-yang movement between / among the different areas.

Super quick little rework - yay/nay/indifference?

Kinda close to call, but I think your crop might edge it out a smidge.

Now I don't know haha. I miss some of the darkness.

Let's cut it down the middle and cut the amount cropped off in half.

Ha ha indeed. Ask me tomorrow, and I might answer different.

I wrestled with how much dark / light to balance / weight the movement / draw. It can be a subtle difference sometimes. This is one of those times, I think.

Maybe I'll open it up to cross post to the presentation forum for their take on it.

Very nice Kent.

That vine breaking the pattern is a nit for me and otherwise a super image

Lean towards the crop.
But here's the thing: A while back on was musing on the difficulty I have capturing and presenting a woodsy scene that works. There is a similar challenge taken here, making something you have seen so well into a well-crafted image that retains interest. And you have succeeded well.
For the most of us....Don't try this at home. Few of these images work and are worked this well.

Nice job Kent!

Morris,

Thanks, I might revisit one without the vine.

Scott,

Thanks, your point at "retains interest" was part of my objective with hopefully some interplay. You're uber-kind words are a bit

Oh yeah ... and since I'm still on CS6 I don't have support for my 80D raw files (unless I go through DPP first), so I typically open in jpgs for my first view / draft in CS6.
