My 6 year old internal card reader is taking a dump. Gonna move to a USB3 external multi card reader. Who has recommendations? Seems like too many of these things just stop working. Don't wanna waste money. What say you?

Lexar is the best IMO. I have tried a bunch and most shit out after a while or have crappy cords/ usb connectors.
The Lexar is rock solid all the time.

Everything else is a waste of money. I do recommend not putting both sets of cards in the reader at the same time just in case you get a lightning strike or something crazy.

IMHO Sandisk readers are the WORST readers out there.

Made the mistake of Buying 2 of the POS things. The last one supposedly the fastest reader out there ( was a few years ago) and cost $80 was easily eclipsed by some $12 no name Chinese thing I bought at a computer shop in a panic when doing an event and leaving the others at home. That thing was brilliant. Drove over an hour back there ready to buy all they had but only one left and they never got more.

The sanshit things have NEVER worked right. Always fussy and finicky to get the card in, have to be plugged and re plugged in again to get nearly any computer to recognise them no matter how many times been there before and just a goddam drama. And often inexplicably S L O W.

The one failing with many readers is they are too shallow. They don't have enough depth to line the card squarely to the pins to make sure they go in straight. Never heard of bent pins in a camera slot where the card is fully engaged but many readers only have the card 1/4 engaged or less which causes problems.

That said, I haven't had that problem with the sandisks so far but the 2 I have, recently have just given up for no apparent reason.
Mrs Bought me another no name from the supermarket the other day after hearing my Cursing and profanities over these sanshit garbage things and the cheapo works perfect. Pull the sanshit thing out that won't read and plug this one in and off it goes.

I'll definitely be getting the lexar real soon.

In fairness, I haven't had any trouble with Sandisk cards but the amount of people I have spoken to first hand and know that have, has made me think I have been Lucky well beyond my lot in life and I won't be buying any more of them either.

Lesser known alternatives are serving friends and I very well and so far, no reason at all to doubt them unlike the sanshit.

Transcend is very fast, reliable and cheap (just get a bunch) : http://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/reviews/card-readers/transcend-usb-3-1-uhs-ii-multi-card-reader-rdf9/

Another vote for the Lexar Pro workflow stuff. I don't use the big modular portion, just a CF and a SD module, each USB3.0. Fast, well built, and though I know this makes no difference at all to anything, really nice packaging as well.

Agreed. I've never had one really last any decent amount of time...

...yeah, I think I'm gonna go with that one...

...even though the Lexar is pricier, I'd say it seems to be a no-brainer; and something that looks and sounds like it will last.

Thanks guys.

You didn't read it properly; the charts are cf and sd speeds they tested with this particular reader. And Lexar cards are great yes, I have a bunch as well

Here's the table for the Workflow; only marginally faster: http://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/reviews/card-readers/lexar-professional-workflow-cfr1/

Lexar readers are better built (I like the usb connection better too); that I do agree. And of course the stacking optiom the workflow provides could be a big plus. Seems like a solid choice. If at some point I need a usb c reader I'll take a look at them for sure.

Daft design putting the cards in at an angle! I have one of them but the delkin devices USB3 UHS-II reader is better:

Allow me to clarify... I wanted a USB3 access point as well. The Lexar offers that. No other external I have found so far does. Usually only internals have additional ports. (I should have stated that in the OP)

Aah ok, that is indeed quite practical; good to know! I will probably need a few usb c readers next year when I replace my macbook and by then surely usb c versions will be available from lexar; will definitely take a look at them

Apple makes a Lightning -> SD Card Reader
https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJYT2AM/A/lightning-to-sd-card-camera-reader

They also make a Lightning -> USB 3 Camera adapter that you can plug many card readers into.
https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK0W2AM/A/lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter

There's also some third party options such as this one:
https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Transcend-RDP9-Smart-OTG-Card-Reader-card-reader-USB/3380774.aspx

EDIT - Just in case you meant Thunderbolt (instead of Lightning), there is a Thunderbolt 2 version of Workflow Hub. It's not really needed unless you're using the new faster XQD and CFAST Cards though. Four 160MB/s CF cards would just barely saturate a USB 3 connection.
