p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Flash Duration Analysis with my new Sekonic L858D-U

Since most manufacturers quote t0.5 times as it's more impressive for marketing, I decided I'd make use of the new Sekonic meter that allows for not only HSS metering, but measures flash duration as well (configurable for t0.5, t0.1 or anything inbetween) — to test all of my lighting for flash duration.

If I can get my hands on other lights to test, I'll add them, or maybe make an interactive chart/graph for all of my flash duration tests.

Very interesting article. Thanks for sharing !
I'm eager to know what will happen when you will finally find a way to upgrade your B2's pack in terms of both colour consistency and, apparently, flash speed.

Well done! Curious to see where the Godox 360, 360 II and 600 would place. Thanks for the write up.

Thank you! If i can get my hands on some godox units, i'll definitely update the article, or make a database with flash durations.

One of my friends just got one and he'll be sending me results from his D2 1000

I've always had an issue with my B2's and updating them -- interestingly, the B1's or my Air TTL Remote have never had any issues.

Very cool! I'd love to see more lights added to the database, especially the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra system (old packs and/or new ELB 400) with the three head types. I've got them, but not the light meter... I haven't been able to figure out if the Quadra's flash duration increases or decreases as power output decreases. I guess there are ways to test this photographically, just never been motivated sufficiently to do it. Seems like this new Sekonic meter is a great solution.

Thank you!

I would like to create a database for flash durations of all types/makes/models, but unfortunately, I only have access to the lights I own. I do have a friend in Japan who's getting one of these and owns a bunch of profoto packs as well as one of the new D2's, and is supposed to send me some readings of his gear.

Additionally, anyone else who owns the meter and any lights not already tested, I'd love to get those results and add them!

I have an 858D-U and will provide data for four Canon 600EX-RT and one Speedlite 430EX III-RT. The variation in the 600EX-RTs should be interesting.

Well the AD600 is quite slow at full power, but picks up once you come to half.

I tested the strobes numbers to the L-858D and it was pretty close (certainly within tolerance)
