I hope Nikon does not continue to play the megapixel game with Canon.

36 to 40+ megapixels are enough.

There is no need to have a 50+ megapixel sensor in this new camera (if it does come out).

Comments ?

Every week a new thread to the D810 successor.
There are a few rumor- and wish threads for it.

Everybody has different needs / expectations. Im currently more than happy with 36MP, don't need more but some might. I think Nikon might just use existing Sony 7R2 sensor, tweak it and call it a day/not necessarily bad thing if yes.

Well, 50MP is 40+ isn't it?

I agree that 36MP is enough - for me. That said, I won't refuse more if Nikon packages is alongside other capabilities that I value. That said, I haven't felt the need to upgrade to a new camera since the D800 came out in 2012, so its successor has big shoes to fill from my perspective.

Nikon: EVF, focus peaking, & focus magnify!!! Without I'll have to move on.
Have Sonys as well but don't like adapters or ergonomics.

At this point, I just hope they don't pull any of the features we currently have...

I still have the 800e since my workhorse is the D4s/D5.

However, likely Nikon is waiting to source a more mP than Canon 5Ds sensor.

It's a Japanese Macho thing "My sensor is bigger (has more mP) than your Sensor."

Maybe, Nikon positioned the D7500 with its current specs so they could bring out a Dxxxx with a 50Mp sensor (APS-C version of 100Mp MF sensor).

It depends on your view. I would gladly have more resolution, 36MP is only 16x24" @ 300ppi with no cropping/interpolation and Nikon & Sigma are stepping up the game with lenses.

Nikon said they made the D800 line to somewhat go after the medium format digital market so I'm sure a successor will be 60ishMP as we're at 100MP with MF. Pixel density on DX shows it will be just fine.

Wouldn't mind more MP but higher DR, higher high ISO performance, a bit higher FPS, D5 AF system, and auto AF fine-tuning are way more important to me.

A split would be nice.
One with the D5 sensor (in a D500 body, a little like the D7500 but with 2 card slots ). This would be THE allround camera and I would be all over it (together with a 24-120/4.0E)
One with 40-50Mpx sensor for those who want/need the Mpx.
Video doesn't interest me at all, only tried it once with the D3S.

I'd agree with this, I think theres scope for a split in the line based around high and lower MP count

I would like to see the same or better high dynamic range than the d810 at iso 64 and more mp's (between 40-50 mp). Maybe also touch lcd screen and video af kind of like the new canon's. Plus 4k 😊

It is slightly worrying that Sony seem to be opening up a real lead in sensor technology. They can produce high resolution, high dynamic range and high frame rate. If Canon has the lenses and video, Sony has the sensors and video, what does Nikon have? Huge financial losses?

So you can sell off your Canon gear.

And the camera is just part of the tool.

Nikon has the best superteles in the world; i.e. in their FL line up. No, Canon is no longer at the top. With the development of the FL line in the last several years, Nikon reclaimed that notoriety. Wonder why few talk about this.

I agree Robert...for me, 36MP is plenty of pixels for both my modest landscape work and wildlife shooting. One thing that my 20.9MP D500 has shown me is that having more pixels per mm does not necessarily lead to better IQ, which is why I still much prefer my D810 for pretty well everything...the D500 only comes out of the bag when I need the speed.

As I've mused previously, what I'd really like the D850 to have is the same 36MP sensor in the D810 but come with the D5/D500's AF module, speed and buffer, which I'd pay big dollars for. Alas, I have no faith than Nikon will produce such a camera, and I really have to wonder whether I'll be interested in the D850 at all, since more pixels alone are no longer important for me. The D5 AF module would be nice, but of little use without the speed.

Probably because 95% of us can't afford, or can but don't want to pay $12,000 for a lens. And will never use those lenses.

Anyway, it's easier for most people to jump on the bashing train... To paraphrase: "A bash of a camera can travel around the world while the truth is still tying it's laces." And bashing is fun...
