Hey all, what would be a solid legacy telephoto around 50-300 f2.8 to maybe f4. Mainly going to be used for video hence why legacy manual isn't to harsh.

Are you looking for a zoom or prime?

I can recommend the Canon FD 4/300 L

For an inexpensive high-quality 300mm prime lens I'll second Phillip's suggestion. For optimum image quality some correction for lateral chromatic aberration helps and there's still some residual color fringes in OOF areas but overall the performance/price ratio is quite good.

If you're looking for a zoom then the c/y 80-200/F4 is well regarded, although there are probably many contenders in that space

I normally am not against primes. Love a good 85 and will be hopefully soon picking up the sony 1.8 that came out not that long ago.

But in this situation i'm sharing my gear with my cousin and we are filming wildlife and also hunts. So a zoom is handy as could have turkey sitting 15 yards in front of you to 200 yards out.

Right now i have a 120-400 sigma ( lens ) but its 4.5-5.6 and with being IS and auto focus it adds a bit more weight i feel than say these older FD lenses that don't have the extra features that are not as needed.

My cousins other complaint which i don't share its more he just needs to get more used to changing lenses. Was that current lens being 120 on close end made it difficult to spin around to get footage of other person sitting next to him. That's why i was thinking something with 50-80 on close end but to me that isn't as important. Because when i am using the system its not to hard for me to change the lenses on the fly.

Only other thought was possibly changing to the sony 24-240 3.5-6.3 but i'm afraid the 6.3 might be bit much when hit lower light times of day shooting into the woods (wish could afford a7s2 at those points for better video and low light performance, but sadly out of price point right now.) Also since it will mostly be used for video and manual focus unsure if want to pay premium to get a newer lens.

While not as highly regarded as many lenses, I really like the CY135/2.8 and 180/2.8. For video, they should be quite good. I would run those two lenses, and the Canon 300/4L.

It's not cheap, but there's a Canon FD 50-300mm f4.5 lens. Don't know much about it but it sounds enticing for your purposes

For zoom lens, FD 80-200mm f4L is excellent, but it uses push-pull mechanism for zooming so I'm not sure if it's suitable for recording. You can check the FD photos thread, Phillip Revee also has plenty of nice samples for you there.

I saw that lens but haven't really heard or seen much on it. Could try and find a clean copy and give it a try I guess..

Those lenses could be fun but want to keep lens swapping to just 2 tops. For say when dealing with turkey and calling them in you got to keep movement low so changing tons of lenses is tricky plus don't want to keep having breaks in recording to change lenses. More want solid footage of them coming in. Think next weekend I will try and keep myself 200mm or less and see how a 70-200 or so would handle for me. Or take risk and grab that 50-300 canon FD that was mentioned.

Other option is sell LA-EA4 and current sigma 120-400 4.5-5.6..

Get a used 6300 and either the 300 or fd 80-200 f4... leave it on the 6300 and then leave a wide lens on a7 and just dual camera it

Phillip,

is there any reason to prefer FD to EF version?

Regards

Some small ones: Cheaper adapter, somewhat cheaper prices, easier repairs, possibly nicer manual focus. Optics seem to be the same or very close.

What about the f2.8L version. Any difference between the FD and the non IS FE glass?

There are actually two...an L and a non-L. The L version is excellent. I owned one for about 7 years and actually just recently sold it a few months ago. I sold it to our local store (World of Photography in Columbus), and they still have it, I believe, so you could maybe buy it from them.

It's a surprisingly sharp lens for such an old zoom with that kind of range. Great color. Purple fringing (well bluish here) can sometimes be visible on very high contrast subjects, but even then it's not bad. Overall, it's really nice. It is a BIG and heavy lens, though...about 4.5 lbs.

Here's probably my favorite shot with it, taken on the A7 II:

Why did you sold? do you prefer modern zooms?

I just wasn't using it much any more, and manual focus for what I shoot long lenses for can be limiting at times. I now have a Sigma 150-600mm for my long lens work, and as such the 50-300mm just sort of sat. I more or less only brought it out to shoot golf once a year due to the weight.

All of my comments are referring to the 50-300 f/4.5L.

Nikon had a 50-300 ED AIS.

I like the Tamron 60-300. There's so many between 50 & 300.

The Canon FDn 80-200L/4 is really good. I’ve had mine for a while, and I actually like the push/pull zoom—I find it’s much easier to zoom and focus manually with that mechanism. Mine is very sharp from wide open, the rendering is very nice, and although it’s sharper at 80mm than 200mm, the latter is still excellent. I’ve taken many of my favorite photos with it.

Just picked up the FDn 300/4L last week and have started seeing what it can do. Definitely bigger and heavier than the 80-200, but shares the rendering and might be sharper (which is surprising).
