I would think Polo would be tough due to the size of the field.

The ones you make no money from.

Hmm, that makes it about all of them doesn't it?

I would think long distance cycling like the Tour de France. If you have to shoot from the sidelines you only get a brief instance to get your shots, but if your lucky enough to shoot from the course, then it means sitting on the back of a motorcycle twisting around trying to shoot behind while trying not to fall off or drop your equipment as the crazy driver weaves in and out of traffic to get you to the next shot!

Yes, to all of the above. High speed, indoor lighting, outdoor sun, difficult/challenging access, subtleties of a sport you don't shoot often. It's why shooting sports is rewarding to me. Circumstances don't always allow for the best of situations, but learning to make what you are given work, and executing creative, intelligent, quality work consistently separates the true professionals I admire from me as a journeyman shooter. There's always more to learn from this work.

Pro level racquetball.
They play on a 4 wall glass court with poor lighting. You have to deal with glass glare, high ISO images, very fast action (lots of diving, etc) and a ball that is traveling over 155 MPH.
And it doesn't pay....

So many different ways you can answer it.

For me, the process of shooting rodeo is actually pretty simple, but the environment is extremely tough on equipment. I fight dust and mud at every rodeo, especially the positions I put myself into. Risk of equipment damage is also high especially when you start getting into arenas with big bulls.

Okay I have done hockey, rodeo, boxing, roller derby and music concerts. So mine is Dirt track racing hard on equipment and very dangerous. Dealing with poor lighting, sun, dust or mud along with drivers have to see you or you could get run over.

I've shot basketball, football, baseball, soccer, rodeo and more for newspapers for decades. I found indoor volleyball a pain to capture really decent action, maybe because I so seldom shoot it.

Hard to shoot technically --or hard to create a compelling image?

I can usually overcome most technical issues -- but I find the lack of variation in motion in tennis (serve, backhand forehand) and golf (drive, chip putt) and swimming makes getting truly differentiated images a real challenge. In these cases its rare for me to get something compelling unless there is real athlete emotion.

My vote is for indoor volleyball and lacrosse to really get down and get some really nice captures.
Indoor swimming can be a bitch if you dont know the sport, which I totally do not.

Mongoose, indoor swimming, outdoor swimming, swimming in general, is pretty easy to shoot once you get the hang of the swimmer's stroke cadence and breathing patterns. And, if the officials let you get into an area where you can get good shots. There are only so many variations of a stroke and start that you have to worry about, and for the most part, the race is pretty linear. Shooting open water swimming is tougher.

The issues with indoor swimming are the lighting, the refs, and parents that get in your way. The problems with outdoor swimming are the lighting (shooting into the sun), the refs, and parents that get in your way.
