p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Coal Mine Canyon: Christmas Day

On Christmas Day 2016, I went up north, with an intention to get to the Grand Canyon where I knew I would find a good snow cover.

Please don't ask me why I ended up at Coal Mine, perhaps this place works as a magnet. Did not mean to stay there for a sunset, but in spite of freezing temps, the road thawed, so I got trapped in thick mud until dark; couldn't get out until the it froze solid.

As the saying goes, if life gives you lemons, make a lemonade. While I was stuck in mud for so many hours, I had nothing else to do except for watching the light and taking pictures. Here is one of them.

C&C welcome,

Sasha.

Nice shot. I was just there for sunrise in early March. I'm sure some of the hardened ruts were yours.

Hey Sasha,

Coal Mine Canyon is a cool place, so I can understand going there. Smart move to wait until the mud froze up to leave rather then getting stuck back there.

Thanks, Stan. Maybe they were mine, although my car stayed on the road, and I just walked to the rim.

I keep waiting for the snow-covered canyon opportunity, and just no luck...

Sasha,

Great place for a photographer to spend Christmas Day. Hope you got a lot more great photos, it's such a cool place. Good thinking on waiting till mud refroze.

Thank you, Jon. I did not have a choice (for waiting) - driving back in wet mud would be dangerous. There is a part of the path, right before merging to highway, where road goes uphill, with vertical wall on one side, sharp drop on the other. This part is not the most pleasant even when dry, so drifting in mud was not an option.
Also, for those who (like myself) keeps forgetting: when in mud/sand, your all-wheel-drive will not be very helpful unless you turn off traction control.

Sasha.
