Hi! Can anyone tell me what those little bubble marks are in my Leica Elmarit? I just purchased this used and it looks a bit fishy. Thanks!

Are you talking about the spots on the edge of the glass? Does it perform well? I don't think they affect performance.

I have a Calter 8 1/2" view camera lens with a big bubble in the glass. It performs great.

Yes spots on the edge of glass. It performs well but just want to have all my facts before deciding on keeping it.

As per Leica repair expert Youxin Ye, those marks are just aging of the paint.

The flakes/specs/spots as shown are not glass bubbles.

It is either glue powdering or black coating getting loose.

Lenses with glass bubbles fetch higher prices for collectors as they impair a unique look to the images.
This was and is very much sought after in bygone days and I for one cherish one of my Leica R lenses with a unique glass bubble.

In your case, this lens is the first version of around 1970/71 and it's shedding flakes from old age.

This is not a problem and won't cause any issues with image quality. As stated by others, it is the black paint at the edges of the elements degrading a little. It's not a problem (not one worth worrying about anyway). It's not 'fishy'. Many Schneider lenses have it and it has come to be known as Schneideritis.

Can't say I've ever directly compared two otherwise identical lenses, ie one with and one without this paint degradation, but if anything, it 'might' result in slightly lower contrast, but probably not (IMHO). I wouldn't even think twice about it if the rest of the lens is good.
