This team was nationally ranked last year. As is almost always the case, HS games provide very poor background. The 300mm 2.8 does wonders for that issue --

Nice indeed!

Last week I was reading a book called Photographing Tennis in which the author goes into detail about where to crop when you have partial leg/upper thigh in a close-up, which is very common in tennis. Crop points are an issue for all of us, but the tennis angles with tight lenses seem to make it more acute. Anyway, he makes a pretty compelling case for moving up to the hip area to balance the frame. I was skeptical -- I tried it on several of my mid-thigh basketball crops and I have to say I like it. Will I do it all the time? No, but probably more often. That’s not a comment on these excellent shots but they triggered that recent memory.

Also, unrelated but I want to live long enough to see a Lax game with a clean background. I doubt the gods will keep me on earth long enough for that. I see so many great lax sets here and every one of the photographers has to work around a school bus, porta-potty, chain link, fat-guy-on-cell-phone mine field. This set is far better than most in that respect but it's tough out there!

PM -- thanks. It is my preference for a close crop in LAX, but kinda' only when really warranted. On some of these, the impact ripple on the players' legs was less than flattering. On others it is the only way to eliminate the wayward sticks that are always present in LAX and hockey.

Shots with the opponent and ball in frame are my favorite, but girls tend to want the individualized selections.

Really nice LAX action shots, sharp and good colors. I think you might want to take a look at how much you sharpen though. I see a lot of black lines around the edges of the players.

Bob -- when I post on the web, I use the Photoshop actions created by Max Simbron. So I really haven't paid attention to the sharpness issue.

However, as my eyesight gets worse, I think I over-sharpen to compensate.

It's because you can't shoot from behind the goal line, like in other field sports. I shoot from the corner or across and very tight. That's the only way. Night games help too. But if the subject is strong enough, the background won't be as significant. Solo player shots are sometimes necessary for schools, but they are seldom powerful enough on their own. You want some interaction.
