Anyone have and test comparing the Canon FD 85mm 1.2L to Canon EF 85mm 1.2L II ?
Wonder about lens advancement, flare control and coma
Thanks

well the EF will AF faster than the FD which isn't something you can usually say about the 85 1.2L

I guess now that there is a solid user base for old FD's on FF mirrorless you could get a direct comparison done

The FD and the original EF 85/1.2 were the same design, so the difference would be the same as that between the EF 85/1.2 vs. II.

Oooh that FD looks nice for using with my Fuji system. Canon's 1.2L II is focus by wire and I am unable to use the lens at all with a dumb adapter

Would love to see IQ comparisons between the two.

They share a similar but not identical optical design. The FD 85L 1.2 had 8 elements in 6 groups, including one aspherical element. The EF lens has an improved 8 element, 7 group design, with two high-refraction elements in addition to the aspherical element. Both have a floating lens group for close focus correction. The New FD version was much lighter, interestingly.

The EF 85L II benefits from improved coatings, rounded aperture diaphragm blades, and ETTL-II compatible firmware in addition to 1.8x faster autofocus over the EF 85L, but otherwise have the same optics.

A good write up of the original EF 85L vs. FD 85L is here:

I don't currently have either lens so can't help you there however I loved my FD85mm L f/1.2 New version from my FD film days!

Actually the EF 85/1.2 Mk1 is different optically than the MkII. They had to use newer, non-leaded glass in the MkII design, and the differences are seen on the Canon MTF. (the Mk1 is actually better optically, due to this.)

I found those links and must say that the difference in those theoretical MTFs ain't bigger than what, IMO would be shadowed by sample variation and that the removal of lead in the glass had no impact.

I took a look at TDPs test shots for the old & new EF version lenses here and at wide open it looks like the old version lens is a little sharper in the center however the new version lens has noticeably less longitudinal CA.

When both are stopped down to f/5.6 the new version lens might be a smidge sharper in the corners however with more edge vignetting.

Of course some of the differences may be due to that all familiar sample variation, ware & tear and general aging.

Yes. Canons theoretical MTFs are submitted below. I think that they clearly show that the substitution of lead in the glass was successful. They seem to be equal beasts to me but I will yield, of course if anyone can show that the designs layout is different...
