Curious: Why are you interested in renting the V1 version? It's a great lens (i should know, I own one) but if the question is regarding renting, why would you be interested in renting the V1 version rather than the current version?
I suppose the V1 rental would provide a bit more relevant operating evaluation (test) , if one is interested in buying a copy of the V1 lens, and not the V2.
However, if one has a good handle on how long (or short) 300mm FL is, and also how heavy (or light) the lens is to shoot with, then the rest of 300 f/2.8 IS MkI or MkII features are extremely unlikely to disappoint anybody.
In my own experience, I jumped from 300 f/4 IS to 300 f/2.8 non-IS without renting anything beforehand. Obviously I knew what to expect reach-wise, however, I underestimated the 300 f/2.8 non-IS weight effects. In those days, shooting with the 3 kg lens handheld was quite burdensome as I lacked practice of that type. After some time, I upgraded to 300 f/2.8 IS MkI, again, with no prior renting, and I was delighted with the IS lens.
Similarly, I went to 300 f/2.8 IS MkII without feeling the need for any prior rentals, and that is perhaps one of my highest valued lenses ever.
Therefore, assuming the OP has got a good feel for 300mm FL, the only reason I would suggest renting 300 f/2.8 IS MkI before buying it, is to make sure that the lens weight doesn't pose too much of a hindrance for the intended manner of lens use. The rest of the lens traits, i.e., the build and performance, is as good as it gets.
