p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Best DX Lenses ?

Hey everyone,

I have an aging D800 and tried out the snappy D500 at the camera store. I really enjoy the speed and responsiveness, my concern is that I don't really have the lenses for this camera.

What are the best DX lenses for someone who shoots editorial portraits, and weddings?
I'm looking for good buys, as well as top level quality.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

For weddings, the very best would be the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 and Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 OS or a good 70-200mm f2.8. There is nothing else that can even touch the 18-35mm on the wider end, and that f1.8 will really isolate your subject.

I have and use the Tokina 11-20, perhaps the sharpest WA zoom I have used, the Nikon 105mm macro, a beautiful macro and portrait lens. On the 70-200mm, get the new Tamron 70-200 G2....early reviews are phenomenal. As soon as its out, I'm buying it!

@sleepwalker33 , what lenses are you using now? Might be a good frame of reference for suggestions.

The Sigma 50-100 1.8 really is special on my D7200. Yes, the range is a bit limited, but combined with the Sigma 18-35 you've got a nice combination.

Currently, I have a 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 50 1.4, 90mm macro. I was thinking of picking up a wide prime as well.

The D500 looks like a great camera, but the bench of lenses doesn't seem as good as something like Fuji's lens choices.

That's probably a pretty accurate assessment. All of the Fuji lenses have been designed and engineered in the last 5 or so years and all are for the APS-C sized sensor, so it does make sense that their dedicated efforts have paid off.

The f/1.8 Sigma zooms are pretty unique and a good place to start. Lots of users here speak highly of those lenses paired with the D500. If you're happy with the 90 macro, obviously that will be fine on the D500 as well, only you'll get some more magnification. If you'd prefer to just keep a similar FOV, there are a range of 60mm macro lenses that will be great options. Both the Nikon 60mm f/2.8 D & G are solid, and there is also the Tamron 60mm f/2 (DX only) which is a pretty interesting little lens.

Wide primes for DX is definitely an area that is lacking for the Nikon system. There simply isn't an auto-focus DX-specific prime wider than 35mm. Again, the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 might fit this use.

It's not DX specific but the 24/1.8G is very good, and it isn't all that large or terribly expensive.

I just use FX lenses. They are even better on crop bodies. Only ultra wide will require some special stuff. I only use my D500 as a teleconverter, so that part of the lens problem is rather secondary to me.

You've raised some good points, and it looks like Sigma has some very solid options. Thanks for the comments everyone.

Nikon 17-55 is a DX lens.

"Back in the day" folks were also using The Beast on their DX cameras

For a wide prime on my DX, I've used a 16mm fisheye (manual focus)

These days I think I could get by with a Nikon DX body and nothing but Sigma lenses.

Hmm...yeah, the Sigma 18-35 looks attractive but...I have been googling the subject and the lens has AF issues shooting wide open. Using the dock would produce inconsistent results. I was reading about a review on the Pentax forum and the author went through 7 copies and still having back or front focusing issues at wide open.

ah, when any lens is being used the aperture is wide open during the AF cycle (shutter button half depressed). then closes down to the appropriate aperture when the shutter button is depressed to shoot (full)

so what i'm wondering is how what you are saying is occurring since the AF cycle is done and no longer in use during the actual exposure.

also, you know, there are more than a few neurotics out there that, no matter what, its the gear. too many know too little about how to use the AF metering system.

^ This.
No need to limit yourself to DX lenses just because it's a DX camera. I've been shooting DX since the D200 and only use 2 DX lenses; the excellent "best $200 I ever spent on a lens" 35mm 1.8 DX and the Tokina 11-16. All the rest are FX.

For weddings I personally would not bother with DX and focus on FX.
The image quality difference is too big. You may want to look at used D3s/D4 series for a similar responsiveness of D500.

image quality difference is too big? now that depends a whole lot on the user. in my work I've seen a whole lot of questionable stuff come off of a whole bunch of good FF cameras/lenses.

For weddings there is only the 17-55mm f/2.8 lenses for DX cameras. For portrait work the 24-70mm that provides a angle of view of a 36-105mm f/2.8 would be my first choice. The 70-200mm f/2.8 VR is a great lens on a DX camera for wedding photography, less so for portrait work.

Since the days of the D3 and D300 I have always had a DX and a FX camera as combined they provide me options not otherwise available. One set of lenses with a DX and a FX camera function like having two sets of lenses.

I used to shoot weddings with a pair of D7100 and a Nikon 17-55mm f2.8. Sold them a couple of years ago. Recently bought a d5300 and a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS as my travel camera. The Sigma is just a bit sharper, and has VR (OS). If I was shooting weddings today with D7200/D500, my choice would be the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8. It's that good.

All good answers here but it seems to me you'd be better served buying a full frame camera. D500 can do what you want but it is much better suited to nature and sports. YMMV
