Tamron 70-200 G2,... any user impressions yet?

Has anyone spent any quality time with the new Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 stuck on the front of their D5, D810 or D500 yet? Not many reviews on it yet, but there seems to be a good number of the Nikon mount sold so far,... well at least enough for some forum discussion and user reviews to start popping up.

If someone were looking to upgrade from Nikon's VR I, what's the recommended direction to take?

The AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II?

The Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2?

Or the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR, a.k.a. The VR III?

If you've got the money, get the Nikon 70-200 f2.8E FL VR, it is superb - I have it and sold my old 70-200 f2.8G VR. If you don't have the money, then maybe a toss up between the Tamron and the Nikon 70-200 f2.8G VRII.

Some reviews are finding the Tamron G2 to be equal or better than the Nikon E FL. I'm not going to link to them because I'll be flamed. From what I've seen there would be no reason to go for the older Nikon VRII. If I had the $$ I'd still buy the Nikon E FL just for future compatibility but otherwise everything I've seen is giving the Tamron some serious praise.

Yeah,... that's what I've been reading too. Nuttin' but praise! But it's all coming from reviewers, paid or unpaid, doesn't matter,... still reviewers. That angry man seems to worship it, and the Aussie seems to have high words for it as well. I'm waiting for shooters to get their hands on it,... hear what the street verdict is.

I got 70-200 G2 and I am quite happy with it. Here is a reputable reviewer not like that other guy ;-)

I have not tried the newest 70-200 from Nikon, but the price difference is so huge and my impressions of 70-200 G2 are so good I see no reason paying double.

If you have money to waste or you make money from photography where you cannot relay on 3rd party AF possible issues get the latest Nikon. Otherwise Tamron represents much better value for your money.

It is incredible that Tamron can sell this lens for $1300 and still make money on it.

The new Tamron 70-200 has extreme focus breathing problems.

According to Granger, Ken & Dustin, no more than the VR II if not a tad bit less. For most shooting still or moving subjects at distance, focus breathing it's a non-issue. For those shooting portrait and head shots, the Tamron has something the VR II doesn't,... an extremely good close focus distance. Even with its close up 'focus breathing' at full zoom, the Tamron allows you to get closer to the subject which makes up quite nicely for the breathing. Even out performing the Nikon 200 f/2.0.

Bottom line,... you can make up for any focus breathing with your feet using the Tamron.

+1

The New 70-200 FL is just superb. No other 70-200 can match it at the moment, not even the highly regarded Canon 70-200 II. You got to pay to play though, it isn't cheap:

My early MTF tests on the Tamron (I won't publish without 10 copies and I've only done 7) are that it's very comparable to the Nikon 70-200 VR II or Canon 70-200 IS II as far as absolute resolution. That is not a comment on anything else - focus breathing, AF, etc. But it resolves very well, amazingly for the price, really.

I would "like" this post but it doesn't seem appropriate haha. That's nuts. I believe the difference there is simply VAT that we don't see in North America (If I back out 20% I get almost exactly the Canadian price). Doesn't change what you have to pay though

How is the autofocus speed. My Tamron 70-200 Non VC while sharp is slow autofocusing. Its great on static or slow moving targets but just doesn't focus super fast. I'd love to have the newer Tamron..

We can speculate all we want. Until real people shoot this lens we won't know. I own the 70-200 FL so I'm in a wait and see mode. Even if the Tammy is as good, I'll stick with my Nikkor. But this lens will be great for people getting into or replacing their 70-200's.

Edit @D5100 Dude: My 70-200 FL focuses immediately as did my VRII.

The real question with the Tammy is going to be focus speed, accuracy, and consistency- if I needed to shoot action, this is where I'd pick up a Nikon/Canon v.II first, if this Tamron isn't up to first-party standards. We do need to see real photographers ragging this lens out.

Tamron's latest VC iterations are vastly improved and largely up to first-party standards and build quality is also improved and not particularly lacking (though maybe so for the most discerning/abusive).

The non-VC is notorious for having slow AF. Both the VC and the G2 are significantly faster.

Thanks for those who pointed out some of the reviews and commentary on the net. As others have said it looks like the new Tamron is very comparable to the new Nikon 70-200mm 2.8e. For half the cost I think I'm going to give it a try.

This weekend I picked up my 70-200mm 2.8 VRI and used it all day Saturday. I use to always tell myself it was passable at 2.8 and if I ever needed sharper pictures I can always stop down. After looking at the results, I was little bummed. After spending the last 3-4 months with the 105mm 1.4, the zoom is starting to show its age not only with sharpness but with contrast as well.

I wanted to purchase the new Nikon 70-200mm 2.8e but at $2800 I just can't justify it. This new Tamron is a much easier pill to swallow for a hobbyist. For my minimal needs I'm not sure if the Nikon is any better. Will see how it goes, wish me luck...

I still have the vr1. I would have upgraded to the new nikon but the price was too much for me. I really could care less about sharpness. I think that the vr1 is plenty sharp. I'm also very happy with the vr1's bokeh. Matt Granger's video showed that the vr2's bokeh looked smoother than the g2. I think that the vr1 looks as smooth as the vr2. Give me better bokeh and sub 2k and I'm there ... Sigma?
