p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sensor in 5DM4 vs. 6D & 5DSR

I was reading a magazine today that was talking about the new sensor technology in the 5DM4 and I was wondering if anyone knows if the 5DSR, which came out only a short while before the 5DM4 did, has the same sensor technology as the sensor in the M4?

I was also wondering if the 6D also uses a sensor that's comparable to the 5DM4 because it takes spectacular photos for a budget FF. Many here have argued that it produces photos better than the old 5DM3.
Thanks - Bill

I think what you are referring to is that the 5D4 was built on the new sensor fab which changed some things to allow for better low-ISO DR. Only the 80D, 1DX2 and 5D4 have been built on this new fab. I guess the M5 also. Not sure about the newer rebels and 77D.

But the 5D3 and 6D are the older sensor design.

But remember that these improvements are for ISO 100-400 (really 200) and for low ISO DR. For high ISO stuff there are small improvements like better noise pattern and less shadow banding even at higher ISOs. The 6D was a slightly better high-ISO sensor than the 5D3.

Pretty sure newer DSLR released in 2017 are all using newer chips as it lowers the overall cost to maintain pricing and they can disable chip functions kind of like what Intel and other chip makers do...

That's why I was wondering about the 5DSR/5DS because they only have an ISO range from 50-1200.

The 5DS/R has basically the same sensor design as the 7D2 (similar pixel pitch, similar noise characteristics at the pixel level). The extra resolution provides for a resizing effect that makes the IQ better at the 7D2 image size, and the 5DS/R records more detail.

The 5D4 has the new sensor design, and does all other things better, other than having 30Mpx vs 50Mpx.

The 6D still holds its own against the 5D4 and 1DX even today for high ISO performance, but has the least resolution (and generally fewer features overall), so either you resize it up and reduce its capabilities or you resize the others down and they will either match or outdo the 6D.

Where do you get your mis-information from, or was 50-1200 a typo

5DsR ISO Sensitivity: Auto, 100-6400 (Extended Mode: 50-12800)

No need to be combative, it's pretty obvious that 50-1200 is a typo for 50-12800.

One of the big differences on the 5DM4 is the movement of the D/A converter from off chip to on-chip.

Not only dr increase, the playability or pliability of the files is better. Not to the level of a sony based sensor but close.
