Hi @Dj R@
Sorry about that arm twisting on the 85GM! (sorry not sorry )
You may have your revenge though as this thread is making me consider the 50 1.4 - which I really don't need as I have the 55 1.8 and love it. I also have the 7Artisans 50mm 1.1, which is M-mount and a unique rendering that I think I am unlikely to use for work, and I've just bought an older 55mm- the Minolta MC Rokkor f1.7, which I blame on Phillip Reeve's amazing shots with this $50 lens. So, I need to see if I really shoot a lot with this FL before I buy MORE.
My portrait kit for a static subject (say, baby photos) would just be the 85GM, plus I'd probably bring the Zony 55 1.8. I'd like to add the Batis 135. I MIGHT bring the 7Artisans 50 if I/client were looking for a different feel.
However, most of my portraits are in the field or on the street. I have little time to get the shot and I don't get to choose the position of the subject, or, often, myself. So the 24-70 GM and the 70-200 GM come into play here and this is why I invested so heavily into GM - I really need the zoom but I also really need good glass. At this moment the 24-70 is on the a7r2 and the 70-200 is on the a9.
The above camera-lens combo is also what I use to shoot sports. If I only owned the two GM zooms and the 85 I would in all honesty be covered for 85% of my shooting, but what fun is that?
So here's what I have at the moment: Rokinon 14mm 2.8, Sony 24-70 GM, Zony 35mm 2.8, Leica Summicron 35mm 2.0 (M-mount), 7Artisans 50mm 1.1 (M-mount), Zony 55mm 1.8, Sony 70-200 GM, Sony 85 GM, and the 2x teleconverter for the 70-200.
I also have a couple Lensbabys (Trio 28, Composer Pro w/ Sweet 35) which I rarely use but are good for getting out of "perfection" mindset, the aforementioned Minolta Rokkor 55mm, an old Contax/Yashica 135 2.8 that I'm also just playing around with, and a few other vintagey finds. Again, I'm so happy with my native lenses that adapting is new to me. I like it as I learn the history of older glass and it keeps my manual skills sharp, but we'll see which if any of these lenses make it into regular rotation.
The Leica Summicron 35 is new to me - since I now have the TAP and since my husband dropped the Zony 35mm (it's in pieces but fixable) I have no compunction about borrowing this off his M10. I may end up shooting a lot more at 35mm!
I tend to rent for landscape/astro as it's not my usual thing, but the next big purchase will be either the Loxia 21 or Batis 18, whichever I see first at a good price. Then the Batis 135.

that's a nice share, thank you.
this is all so therapeutic, isn't it?
I had a 24-70 2.8 VR E, the new one, and sold it recently. I was really only allowing my assistant to shoot with it during weddings. I don't like normal zooms though, prefer primes. but for what you use it for, I get why you have one in this FL.
I have a 70-200 2.8 VR E FL, the new one, and it is probably the very best (normal to minimal-tele) zoom on the planet right now. it is sharp, contrasty, great color, excellent AF, and not that heavy!!! I have read about the GM not being up to par, I will have to rent one and see for myself.
Regarding the 50 1.4 Zony.
that was supposed to be my first Sony love.
but I had to return it b/c of the recall thing.
I had it for a day or two, and I could tell it is amazeballs.
the reason I chose it?
I believe, it's the best 50mm (with AF) on the planet right now - when you consider strengths and weaknesses.
I mean, there is pretty much nothing wrong with it. AF works well with EYE AF, sharp as anything, contrasty, nice color, no weird focal shift like the 50L or the 58G. the next tier 50mm lenses from Canikon suck, the 50 1.4 on both sides.
Both of their 50 1.8G are good and cheap, but nothing crazy.
Zony 50mm 1.4
think about it. it's $100 off right now, for how long, I don't know... anyone?
when considering money is no object... and you're either a pro or a semi pro, or a serious enthusiast.....
it's gotta be the best 50mm available, on all three platforms.
I guess one caveat? at 778 grams, I think it's a pig for a 50mm
But as others have mentioned back in march, in this thread,
one nice step forward, you're at 35
one healthy step back, you're at 85
with a 50mm, you're basically LIMITLESS.
so you may as well have a great one, you can roll with just that one lens!
MFD on the 35 1.4 is 1' (30 cm)
MFD on 50 1.4 is 1.48' (45 cm)
MFD on the 85GM is 2.62' (80 cm)
weight in grams
Sony 35 f1.4 630
Sony 50 f1.4 778
Sony 85 1.4 GM 820
--
but alas,
Since I only have the B85 right now, and the 28 FE, I am rocking the B85 all the time
inside and out!
I am constantly amazed at how much I can live with just an 85
it's even ok indoors.
I have an open floor plan, so that helps, obviously.
but I can not get over how much light the B85 can produce! and how clean the files are with the A7Riii.
and I own a D750 and D850 and a host of their best glass!
I am in my glory. Look out!!!
I may just end up with the following Sony bag:
Sony 12-24 f4, for commercial interior uw
Sony 35 1.4 & Sony 85 1.4 GM for my wedding and portrait session combo ( I dual wield with a money maker )
Sony 28 f2 & Sony 50 1.4 for family
I think if I ended up with all that... when heading out with the family and just one body and one lens, I would be constantly thinking, man, I wish I had a 55 1.8 for today. A nice FL to be at, a real swiss army knife of a portrait lens.
AND OH SO LIGHT. but then I would be ALWAYS be watching over my shoulder, lusting for the 50 1.4.
life is short.
have them all.
