That really is how I feel about the 28, it dosnt quite match my other lenses. I dont want to hate on it, because it is a good lens, but when trying to fill out my bag with lenses that as you say, you can trust any, it seems to just fall a bit short.

Not wanting to hijack this threat totally, I think we can bring it full circle to say that the 50 1.4 is that nice/good of a lens that so many of us are complaining because we want all our FL to be as good!

well said, and it's nice to hear a moderate voice when discussing the 28 - there are a lot of things i like about it but ultimately it falls short of other lenses i have and that tends to really get some people fighting mad!

Yeah it seems people either love or hate the 28. Some want to say it is nearly identical to the Batis 25 others call it a trash lens. I do not understand how someone can really claim either of those sides, unless they had a horrible copy. It really is a nice lens, especially for its size, it is tiny and it nails focus fast! But, it just is not in the same league as some of the other lenses we have such as the 50 1.4. As we say so often, there are trade offs of nearly all lenses. Chose what matters to you.

Not trying to derail the discussion completely, but the comparison brought to mind a question I have about whether with two completely different lenses as the Sony 50/1.4 and the Loxia 50/2 have particular pros/cons in my normal working range of f/2.8 to f/11? I know Fred uses his Loxia quite a lot on his landscapes, and wonder if that might not be the best eventual choice for me, considering I have other 50mm options on hand.

Can anyone pitch in with what they like about either of these lenses slightly stopped down?

Personally I find the 28mm superb for what it is...a nice compact travel lens at a great focal length and a very nice aperture. Some examples:

@ecarlino
@GMPhotography
@Ken_Cravillion
@elizabeth77
great old thread
I wish you guys had a gear list so I can see what you ended up with.

GM you had the 50 and 85 1.4
and you sold them
did you get either of them back?

how about the rest of you, what is your current lineup for portrait and also your own family stuff?
I mainly shoot portraits professionally. weddings. and a lot of personal/family/adventure stuff. my daughter is 2, and we have another on the way!

I have been all over the place lately with my plans for my Sony bag.

I am sitting on Nikon D850/D750 28 1.4, 105 1.4, 70-200 2.8E. and I use a 12-24 Art for commercial real estate, mainly interior space.

Since going Sony as an alternate platform, last week, I have been thinking more and more each day to selling my 28 1.4 and using Sony as my wide angle. 35 1.4.
by spring, possibly converting to Sony completely, IF, I am that satisfied, by then.

I currently have the 28 f2 and B85 (purchased used here on the b/s for $800 local/cash deal)
so I was thinking....
I'll probably flip the b85 once I receive the 85GM, which I had to order last night after Elizabeth twisted my arm.

1. Go 35 1.4 and 85 1.4 GM for professional work.
Keep my 28 and add a 55 and use these two for personal use!
TWO really dangerous combos there, for their respected intended use! right?

However, I LOVE the idea of the 50 1.4. it's such a beauty.
I owned it for 10 minutes before I had to return it due to the recall issue.

I do not feel like I NEED a 50 1.4 and a 85GM though. I like 85mm more, it's the greatest FL for portrait IMO.
But I really WANT to have the 50 1.4 for when I just want to carry ONE LENS.
But I feel that it's wasteful. and then I don't have a lighter portrait lens for family stuff. I am not going to keep the B85 and 85GM, no way.
so 55 is my ticket, I think!

1. get the pro kit and the reasonable kit and have 35/85 and 28/55

or

2. it's just money and lbs...
go B25 / 50 1.4 for family, with the 50 1.4 being a bit better (AF wise) when compared with the GM.
and still own 35/85 for paid work.

If I go with #1, I would want to order the 55 while it's on sale, so soon.
Does anyone know when the current BF deals will last until?

This thread has been quite a bit of help. I'm just curious where your journey has lead you.

I could imagine having
Nikon D850 105 1.4 and/or 70-200E and no other nikon glass. I just don't have any connection with any other glass on that platform!
And then using Sony 35/50/85 along with my tele/nikon. Eventually, could just rock Sony for all of it. and sell all my nikon stuff, and have two A7rIII... CRAZY TIMES!
Thank you for any insight!

Dj R-

at one point i had the Batis 25 + 50/1.4 and 35/1.4 + 85/1.4
i saw them as 2 separate kits and would choose one of the pairs on any given day (i'm a tourist, not a pro). I would, based on itinerary also add the Batis 18 to either pair.

i came from Nikon after the D800 and into the first generation a7r. i had nikon's 2.8 zoom trinity and have been on a quest for an ever smaller kit for my hobby/travels.

i didn't mind traveling with 5 lenses (and picking 2 or 3 each day to walk around with), but now i'm down to only 4 lenses (b18, b25, 50/1.4 and b135). the gap between 50 and 135 may be a stretch for some, but it fits me well, as i tend to shoot inside of 50 anyhow and when i wanted something longer, 85 wasn't enough and 200 is too much - so 135 as a foc len was a great fit and the batis is simply perfect.

i think the lenses i ended up with are quite good and if there was a criticism is that among them there aren't any that have the super silky sweet rendering of either the 35/1.4 nor 85GM and i do sometimes miss that - although in the right situations, the 50/1.4 and B135 can come close (here's an example of the 50/1.4)

Looks like an amazing kit that you have now. Beautiful capture of... perhaps your son?

Hey! For portraits I currently have the 50mm 1.4Z, 85mm GM, Nikkor 105mm 1.4E, Sigma Art 135mm 1.8 and Canon 200mm f2L IS. I used to have the Batis 85mm but recently sold that as it sat on the shelf once the GM 85mm arrived earlier this year.

Currently my most used portrait lens is the Nikkor 105mm via Commlite adapter on either my A9 or new A7RIII. That's for weddings and portraits in studio or outdoors.

For wedding candid stuff I'll use my 35mm 1.4Z and 85mm GM most of the day. I also had the Batis 25mm but recently sold that as it sat in the bag for months at a time. If you're really going to sell your Nikkor 28mm 1.4E shoot me a PM as I was planning on buying one before the end of the year for use at weddings on my Sonys.

For pictures of my daughters/family I'll use anything from the 50mm to the 105mm. Just depends on the situation and where I'm shooting them.

My gear list is B18, 35 1.4Z, 50 1.4Z, 85GM, 90 macro, Nikkor 105mm, Sigma 135mm, Canon 200mm, 12-24G, 16-35GM, 24-70GM and 70-200GM and will be adding the Nikkor 28mm soon.

Good stuff. Why do you need a Nikkor 28 when the Zony 35 is so good?

I'm a fan of fast wide angles having the Canon 24L and 24L II in the past. I'd love something fast and just a smidgen wider than the 35mm 1.4Z. I've been hovering over the buy now on Amazon the past few days and will probably end up having it this week.

I've got the Batis 18, 25, 85 and 135; the Sony 35/1.4 and 50/1.4; and the Loxia 35 and 50.

My go-to portrait kit has become the 35/1.4, 50/1.4 and 135, while my go-to landscape kit is the 18, 25, and two Loxias. And then, whenever I'm planning to shoot *both* portraits and landscapes, I have a tough time deciding what to take with me...

Despite the fact that the 35 and 50 are admittedly a little close together in focal length, they're both phenomenal lenses that render a little differently, so I'm usually happy to carry both at the same time. The 35 is a little creamier, the 50 is a little punchier (color/contrast).

I've found that I prefer 135 to 85 for portraits. So lately I've only been using my 85 for indoor use (where 135 can be too long, and where the larger aperture of the 85 is more important). Otherwise, the 85 stays at home. Mind you, I wonder whether part of that is because the Batis 85 is less special, in terms of its rendering, than my other lenses. I've toyed with the idea of replacing it with something more unique, like the 85 GM or Loxia 85.

If we're comparing the 35/1.4 to the 50/1.4, and if I could only own one, I'd actually give the edge to the 35/1.4 for its creamier rendering. But the catch is finding a good copy. I went through three or four bad ones before I got a stellar one, and I can tell you that there's a noticeable difference between a mediocre copy and a great copy.

Finally, I'll mention that the Loxia 50 is a lovely lens, which is why I own it as a more portable alternative to the 50/1.4 when I want to travel light. I much prefer it to the 55/1.8, as it has a little more color/contrast and less CA. So that's another option to consider, if you can do without AF.

Hi @Dj R

Sorry about that arm twisting on the 85GM! (sorry not sorry )

You may have your revenge though as this thread is making me consider the 50 1.4 - which I really don't need as I have the 55 1.8 and love it. I also have the 7Artisans 50mm 1.1, which is M-mount and a unique rendering that I think I am unlikely to use for work, and I've just bought an older 55mm- the Minolta MC Rokkor f1.7, which I blame on Phillip Reeve's amazing shots with this $50 lens. So, I need to see if I really shoot a lot with this FL before I buy MORE.

My portrait kit for a static subject (say, baby photos) would just be the 85GM, plus I'd probably bring the Zony 55 1.8. I'd like to add the Batis 135. I MIGHT bring the 7Artisans 50 if I/client were looking for a different feel.

However, most of my portraits are in the field or on the street. I have little time to get the shot and I don't get to choose the position of the subject, or, often, myself. So the 24-70 GM and the 70-200 GM come into play here and this is why I invested so heavily into GM - I really need the zoom but I also really need good glass. At this moment the 24-70 is on the a7r2 and the 70-200 is on the a9.

The above camera-lens combo is also what I use to shoot sports. If I only owned the two GM zooms and the 85 I would in all honesty be covered for 85% of my shooting, but what fun is that?

So here's what I have at the moment: Rokinon 14mm 2.8, Sony 24-70 GM, Zony 35mm 2.8, Leica Summicron 35mm 2.0 (M-mount), 7Artisans 50mm 1.1 (M-mount), Zony 55mm 1.8, Sony 70-200 GM, Sony 85 GM, and the 2x teleconverter for the 70-200.
I also have a couple Lensbabys (Trio 28, Composer Pro w/ Sweet 35) which I rarely use but are good for getting out of "perfection" mindset, the aforementioned Minolta Rokkor 55mm, an old Contax/Yashica 135 2.8 that I'm also just playing around with, and a few other vintagey finds. Again, I'm so happy with my native lenses that adapting is new to me. I like it as I learn the history of older glass and it keeps my manual skills sharp, but we'll see which if any of these lenses make it into regular rotation.

The Leica Summicron 35 is new to me - since I now have the TAP and since my husband dropped the Zony 35mm (it's in pieces but fixable) I have no compunction about borrowing this off his M10. I may end up shooting a lot more at 35mm!

I tend to rent for landscape/astro as it's not my usual thing, but the next big purchase will be either the Loxia 21 or Batis 18, whichever I see first at a good price. Then the Batis 135.

We're moving to NY, you'll have to drag me to B&H or Adorama lol.

Great I grew up in both those stores. Love NY but not when I went to the School of Visual Arts back in the late 70’s not a place to be. Now it’s awesome. I shoot a big show there in July. I’m there 3 times a year. My wife goes all the time. Get this she wants to retire there. Lol

that's a nice share, thank you.
this is all so therapeutic, isn't it?

I had a 24-70 2.8 VR E, the new one, and sold it recently. I was really only allowing my assistant to shoot with it during weddings. I don't like normal zooms though, prefer primes. but for what you use it for, I get why you have one in this FL.

I have a 70-200 2.8 VR E FL, the new one, and it is probably the very best (normal to minimal-tele) zoom on the planet right now. it is sharp, contrasty, great color, excellent AF, and not that heavy!!! I have read about the GM not being up to par, I will have to rent one and see for myself.

Regarding the 50 1.4 Zony.
that was supposed to be my first Sony love.
but I had to return it b/c of the recall thing.
I had it for a day or two, and I could tell it is amazeballs.
the reason I chose it?
I believe, it's the best 50mm (with AF) on the planet right now - when you consider strengths and weaknesses.
I mean, there is pretty much nothing wrong with it. AF works well with EYE AF, sharp as anything, contrasty, nice color, no weird focal shift like the 50L or the 58G. the next tier 50mm lenses from Canikon suck, the 50 1.4 on both sides.
Both of their 50 1.8G are good and cheap, but nothing crazy.

Zony 50mm 1.4
think about it. it's $100 off right now, for how long, I don't know... anyone?
when considering money is no object... and you're either a pro or a semi pro, or a serious enthusiast.....
it's gotta be the best 50mm available, on all three platforms.

I guess one caveat? at 778 grams, I think it's a pig for a 50mm
But as others have mentioned back in march, in this thread,
one nice step forward, you're at 35
one healthy step back, you're at 85

with a 50mm, you're basically LIMITLESS.
so you may as well have a great one, you can roll with just that one lens!

MFD on the 35 1.4 is 1' (30 cm)
MFD on 50 1.4 is 1.48' (45 cm)
MFD on the 85GM is 2.62' (80 cm)

weight in grams
Sony 35 f1.4 630
Sony 50 f1.4 778
Sony 85 1.4 GM 820

--

but alas,

Since I only have the B85 right now, and the 28 FE, I am rocking the B85 all the time
inside and out!
I am constantly amazed at how much I can live with just an 85
it's even ok indoors.
I have an open floor plan, so that helps, obviously.
but I can not get over how much light the B85 can produce! and how clean the files are with the A7Riii.

and I own a D750 and D850 and a host of their best glass!

I am in my glory. Look out!!!

I may just end up with the following Sony bag:

Sony 12-24 f4, for commercial interior uw
Sony 35 1.4 & Sony 85 1.4 GM for my wedding and portrait session combo ( I dual wield with a money maker )
Sony 28 f2 & Sony 50 1.4 for family

I think if I ended up with all that... when heading out with the family and just one body and one lens, I would be constantly thinking, man, I wish I had a 55 1.8 for today. A nice FL to be at, a real swiss army knife of a portrait lens.
AND OH SO LIGHT. but then I would be ALWAYS be watching over my shoulder, lusting for the 50 1.4.

life is short.
have them all.

We use the 50/1.4 since it came out for portraits and weddings alike, our most used lens together with the 35/1.4. The 85GM is used for portrait session mostly.
Although the 50 is said to need a recall, ours, too, I never had had any issues or observed any problems. And we shoot in all kinds of weather. That said, it is an amazing lens and the one I would go for immideately.
We had the 28 and 55 and 85 Batis. 55 and Batis are nice, but I didn't like the cats eye bokeh of the Batis and the CAs of the 55. The 50 is just so much better. I like the rendering, it is super sharp and almost no CAs, that is super for shooting backlit portraits. The 28 is not in the same ballpark in my opinion. The rendering of the 35/1.4 is so much better and our copy is very sharp wide open, only minimally trailing the 35 Art. I would like to have a 24/1.4 GM and a 20/1.8 similar to Nikon's version, too. Maybe Sony is doing something about it in the future.

excellent feedback thx

do you think the 85 is not good enough, AF wise, for normal wedding use..... and that's why you use it for more static portrait work?

do you think all the usa copies of the 50 are effected? I wonder if the big box stores would have returned all of the bad lot and got the newer lot?

cheers

excellent feedback thx

do you think the 85 is not good enough, AF wise, for normal wedding use..... and that's why you use it for more static portrait work?

do you think all the usa copies of the 50 are effected? I wonder if the big box stores would have returned all of the bad lot and got the newer lot?

cheers

No, AF is fine. Usually you learn to anticipate after some time and I rarely need to go from fully out of focus to in focus, where the 85GM takes a bit longer than other lenses ;-). If it locks focus it tracks nicely. The Batis is quicker, but the rendering of the 85 GM is second to none and I really can't remember of a focus fail ever (and I don't like cat's eye bokeh that much).
In Germany we don't have that much room to make use of long lenses in a church or free wedding. If possible, the 85GM is used, of course. Sometimes the pastor or other people accidentally block your way and we need to use the camera overhead from closer distance to get the ring exchange etc. A 35 or 50 is perfectly flexible and gives you more context! If necessary I can crop the 50mm. So my wife up front is using the 50 on one and the 35 on another camera. I use the longer lenses from further away (85, 135 or 70-200) to get a different perspective. The 85 is used in all our portrait session together with the 50mm almost exclusively. For some shots we like to use the 5div with 35/1.4ii. Super sharp lens.

I don't know for sure regarding the recall. In Germany we didn't get any notice or recall information etc. Sony representatives I called once didn't know of anything.
