Going to have to wait on some high res photo's shot at 1.8, because by this video they look soft to me. At least compared to my Nikon 105 1.4E and the Sigma 85 Art. Don't get me wrong, not soft like the 135 DC, just softer than I expected.

You can't make any assumptions from a YouTube video. Also I don't think any of the Art lenses are soft so I would be really surprised if this one bucked the trend.

I too would be quite surprised if the 135 yielded soft images.

Maybe you should watch the video again... start at 5:10, reviewer seemed to be impressed with the lens, states as much very clearly. Maybe you could contact him directly with your concerns and request sample images to soothe your pre-purchase buyer's remorse.

Sample images encompass a lot of variables. "Sharp" doesn't deal with vignetting, CA, flare, distortion, AF speed/accuracy etc. Also "Sharp" would be at what distances and F stops. I would like to see some lens reviews before I buy this lens. "

My main concern is Astrophotography. Ho will the stars look at the corners. Guess I'll have to wait and see. I already have the Zeiss 135mm Apo, the only thing I'm missing is autofocus. Not sure if Sigma will outdo the image quality of the Zeiss. But I'd like to find out.

I have no need for this lens but that big front element makes me want it anyway.

How about this review of Sigma 135/1.8 (in German)

https://www.docma.info/blog/erster-test-sigma-f1-8-135mm-art

It looks sharps and free of chromatic aberrations. But then, adapter and different glass stack at the sensor may affect image quality. There are no full samples, though they display two crops.

Front element on this lens is the exact same size as the 105mm F/1 .4 , 82mm

The mtf graphs didn't look that great to me, but maybe it'll be surprising good?

Are we looking at the same MTF graphs? I though they looked amazing, pretty much a flat line just short of perfect out to 20mm:

it's just real close to the Canon 135 f2 mtf and i figured for a much newer/larger lens that it would be noticably better. It'll be interesting to actually see images from it once it starts shipping.

Cool. I have no need for that lens either, but now I want that too.

Does that mean the 105 1.4E bests this lens?

Ah, I see what you mean. I looked up the Canon 135/2 MTF and it does look good. I wonder whether Canon and Sigma MTFs are directly comparable.

From comparing MTF for the Sigma 135/1.8 to MTFs for some of Sigma's other lenses, I expect the 135/1.8 to be razor-sharp. It will be interesting to see how it behaves with regard to other attributes (rendering, focus speed, chromatic aberrations, etc.).

Some very impressive samples from a German website, the pictures looks very sharp and the bokeh very smooth and pleasant.

agelessphotog, you can't really compare mtf's for different focal lengths and typically a longer focal length lens will have a flatter mtf. mtf's between brands of the same focal lengths should be comparable-sigma and canon both use theoretical mtf graphs i believe. I don't know what nikon uses for their lenses.
