The 85/1.4GM was designed for professional portrait photographers which often shoot under studio lighting at f/5.6 or even f/8 apertures.
It makes zero sense the lens will attempt to achieve focus at f/8!! It's to a point where the AF system will be forced to switch to contrast detect points.
Luckily for me, I mainly use this lens from f/1.4 to f/2 but I can see how irritating that would be for studio shooters.
This should be a quick firmware upgrade for Sony...

Yes its mystifying.
I wonder if it's to do with wanting to be able to advertise high burst rates with CAF (especally on the 63/500 and on some future faster FF) Continuous focus with big bursts would be very hard to do with the aperture opening and closing between shots.

But if this is true, it's still no excuse. They could turn stopped down focus only in burst mode.

I had a bad felling I said it backwards yesterday. The Tech a Pro quote is correct than it's on the vertical. Getting old man . Lol

Seriously thanks for correcting me, I hate bad info so thanks. Guy

But Guy in one of the Techart PRO threads you wrote:

"Remember focus is best achieved on vertical lines and not horizontal. Always look for a vertical contrast spot to get the best focus. This really is how Sonys work best."

I added this tip to the FAQ.

Glad to be able to help. I know that my AF focus accuracy improved when I started to deliberately choose verticals to focus on.
