Looking to add a lens to use on my D750 for events, portraits, family stuff, etc. Right now, I have a 20 f/1.8G, Tamron 35 f/1.8 VC and 70-200 f/2.8 E FL, all of which I like. I also have a 24-120, which is a nice walk around, but I usually use the faster lenses.

I am interested in adding something in between the 35 and 70-200 such as the 58 f/1.4G or perhaps stretch to the 105 f/1.4 E since it seems like the perfect portrait lens. Any suggestions?

Without a doubt, add a 58mm f/1.4G. My favorite lens of all time.

I guess I need to decide which one first. I am leaning towards the 105, but it would overlap with the 70-200 although with a much faster aperture.

+1 for the 58G. Although the 105E's sharpness wide open is undoubtedly better, the 58 is much more versatile, and you already have a very good lens at 105mm.

IMHO, the only reason to go for the 105E first would be if you'd shoot portraits at that FL all the time and felt the need to get shallower DOF than with your zoom.

Another vote for 58mm f1.4. Have this to complement 24, 35, 70-200 FL and 105 f1.4. For vacations I carry 24, 58 and 70-200 which cover the range well.

You guys are convincing me to try the 58. That will cover the role of both 50 and 85, which will be nice for general and full body portraits. The new 70-200 already covers the long end well for tighter portraits.

I have the 58 and agree with your assumption that it isn't necessary to have a 58 and 85, especially since you already have a 70-200. Personally I hate zooms and shoot a 20/35/58/105 combo for weddings with the 35/58/105 covering about 95% of the day.

I'd buy the sigma art 85mm.

Just know what to expect. A sharp well corrected lens this is not, if you want something that looks like your 70-200 buy the sigma art 50mm.

UPS just arrived! Test shot with the cat at f/1.6 below. Seems sharp enough for me right out of the box. Thanks again for everyone's help to push me over the edge and give this lens a shot.

With doubt. Please rent before you buy. I did (twice) and just couldn't pull the trigger. It has potential for magic but is a flawed gem. At it's price, you should try before you buy

It probably will be right in the very centre. Everywhere else, not so much....

Thanks! Even my wife could tell I had a new lens when she looked at the few pics I took today. I plan to keep this lens glued to my D750 for a while so I can get to know it.
