I was facing west with the sun rising behind me when these immature Bald Eagles started their air show behind me. I was lucky to capture it but the rising sun was directly behind the action so a difficult exposure at best. In any case, the female has a bird? and the male wants it. Final score - Female keeps the prize but she is missing 4+ tail feathers. mm, 1/2000, f4, auto ISO-100, +1.0ev, 500mm. cc

Great series! I really enjoyed looking these over. Wow, the robber really inflicted some damage on the one eagle.

Thank you. I asked a freind who is a Falconer about the damaged tail feathers. He said they have 12 tail feathers and a hole that large will affect her maneuverability. She will start to molt in the spring and the feathers will grow back during the summer but usually they loose one tail feather at a time.

Great action series.
I wonder how you know male from female of these two? Usually unless it is a nesting pair where on average the female is larger you can't tell without DNA.

Great captures of the action.

Like Geoff says, you certainly can't tell the differences in sex between those two eagles by looking at them.

Obviously I don't the sex but to my eye one of the birds is larger than the other and I am assuming the larger bird is the female. Also I have the advantage of looking at about 30 more images from the sequence so I am not basing it off these alone. I have a couple where they they are flying above and below each other where one is fairly clearly the larger than the other.

Two eagles side by side with one being larger does NOT prove the larger one is a female. A three year-old male can be larger than a two year-old female.

Two size measurements, beak depth and hallux (toe claw) length, show the greatest separation in sexes. These measurements can be used in the following equation: sex = (bill depth x 0.392) + (hallux length x 0.340) -27.694 (measurements in millimeters). If the answer is positive, the eagle is a female. If the answer is negative, the eagle is a male.
