Sometimes I step out of my comfort zone and put on a 1,4x converter on EF 300mm f/4L IS. When PPing I wonder, if I could do better without. I have tried both ways, but cannot decide which is easier to get "decent" results.

Whar do you think, if the focusing distance stays the same.

Jarmo, the last time I shot with 300 f/4 IS was 11 years ago, but I do remember my lens was not sharp with the 1.4xTC II at longer range. Then I replaced the IS version with the older non-IS model, and although that lens was sharper, it still didn't impress me with the TC on.
Therefore, my advice is to shoot 300 f/4 IS bare, and work on the ways to get closer to your targets. That is pretty much a universal principle (with some exceptions such as when shooting gators, bears, etc..) .

Peter, thanx not advising me to go shopping

I usually use it for DIF. No dragonflys around quite yet here. So a few days I got to the creek for a dipper. As you can imagine, there was a creek between us, (no gators visible) getting closer was a wet and cool business And I didn't have my Finlandia survivor kit with me

But it is quite amazing what PP can do today. From a mess I got a picture almost usable in my year book. Remember the rule of a book, no zooming allowed.

I was wishing somebody had found magic PP beverage.

Getting closer is great advice, but in so many cases not possible. If you can't get sharper images with your TC on that lens than you can with up-sizing in post-processing, something is wrong with your gear, or you are not increasing your shutter-speed enough to compensate for the longer focal-length.

Hi Tony and thanks

Had to use ISO 3200 in 7D, the file looks messy before PP. I am not used to this high ISO values. So I am asking around.

Jarmo,

Yeah, 3200 on the 7D is not nice. I would tripod test with the 1.4x on your 300 to see if it is front or back-focusing.
