I've been holding off on this purchase because I've been reading that the af-assist is very weak. Is this true?
I can't decide between this or the Cactus RF60X. Thoughts?

My thought is that the Cactus AF assist light is also basically useless. I would classify both as a waste of time, to be honest.

I assume you're talking about the AF assist bean on the Cactus V6II. On Nikon, it worked but sometimes neglected to turn off and left a big red light in the frame. The Godox X1T beam is almost identical. I really don't use if AF assist, so not sure of any specific issues, but from my tests I would say it is comparable to the Cactus. On the whole, these 3rd party trigger AF assist beams in triggers are really just a red LED. It isn't like the AF assist on a native speedlight that changes position with the AF point, has a pattern projected through a lens, and has some range. It is really just a little LED adding some red light. If you're planning to use one of the Godox TTL speedlights on camera to control your off camera lights, then you'll probably do a bit better. I do this on the Nikon end, but again I haven't really had much need for the AF assist.

Four of them on my d610s, no problems.
I believe Canon version is more problematic for some reason.

I don't use AF assist lights on any of my flashes, any brand and rarely have focus problems in reception lighting. I started shooting digitally with Canon, switched to Nikon and now using Godox 860IIn. I find an AF beam telegraphs to the subject that I'm about to take a shot and frequently the subject reacts to the AF beam, I don't want that happening so I turn them off right out of the box.

There seems to be some inconsistencies with the AF beam on the V860 lights. Some people say they point in the right direction, while others say they don't. I have several Nikon versions of the V860's, but run with the AF beam switched off for reasons stated by MRomine.

I'm so spoiled by the Nikon AF beams, I hate all the 3rd party beams. I try not to use them due to their painfully noticeable pattern and inaccurate placement (the marks sometimes fall between AF points). Love the Godox system otherwise though

AF Assist does not work yet in the Canon 5D Mark IV. Waiting for a Adorama Flashpoint R2 Li-On (Godox 860IIc) firmware update.

If you can email Godox, they are the ones who will likely release the update.

Unfortunately these firmware updates do not solve the problem.

I appreciate that. I've emailed them twice now with no help.

The issue is, the AF assist beam does not emit when you have either the Flashpoint Li Ion R2 or X1c transmitter on top of a Canon 5D Mark IV. It works fine on the 5D Mark III. I have tried every setting and combination possible, but can only hope that firmware update will fix the issue.

The zoom lion should work; the older transmitters wont work, thanks to a change by Canon. Have you checked that the focus mode is set to servo or intelligent, and not "single"?

Unfortunately firmware wont fix it - it's a hardware issue that Canon changed - Godox says any units after August are fixed for this problem.

The same flash was tested on a Canon 5D Mark III and it worked just fine.

I have had no trouble in the limited use I have Given my 860 on my canon.

I like the beam actually. Going back to the film days and 45 Metz Hammer heads on my Nikon F4's, I used it to shoot from the hip literally and got some great shots with it.

It's actually a little surprising that the manufacturers use visible wave length illuminations for these things at all. Surely it would be no trouble to use a non visible light wave length so you could pump all the beams and patterns you wanted into the scene and it would never show up in the pics or be seen by the naked eye.

You don't see the beam coming out of your TV remote but you can see it in the electronic viewfinder on your camera or your phone.

I don't use it because on my D4 it causes the camera to back focus, like every assist beam there is.

New 5D4 firmware and the AF Assist is still broken. I'm almost to the point where I might have to sell the Flashpoint/Godox units.
