Nice!
The head does look oddly shaped from that angle, do you have any pics from head on?

Daniel.

Wow, that is a wierd-looking guy. Here is an index with some great info (and photos) of North American ants ... but I didn't see one that looked like yours.

Here are some of the best ant photos I've ever seen of that area (or anywhere else), but I didn't see yours

So am I, at least for the genus. It is "a highly specialized resident of live Guadua bamboo in western Amazonia". Other species in the genus are found in live or dead bamboo in the same localities. How you tell then apart was not found in my search.

Harold

Thanks the author of that Page Alex Wild has another page. I did a search on there and if you scroll about half way down his page, I think I found this spps.: http://www.alexanderwild.com/Ants/Taxonomic-List-of-Ant-Genera/Camponotus/

Thanks, there were near a grove of river cane/bamboo but were actually found on an old structure nearby so maybe the at the species level it isn't the same. maybe I'll send the photos to Alex Wild and see if he can confirm or not.

At least one species in the genus is polymorphic but I got no further. The question is whether the long head is a species or caste characteristic.

I shot an email to A. Wild for his opinion. There were definitely not living in Bamboo as the species description indicates so maybe not. Thanks.

I guess if I would have bothered to read your post (rather than look at the image and scroll through ant images online), I would have simply Googled "Camponotus mirabilis" and said, "I agree"
