Depends how cold and what camera you are using. I shoot ski racing in the winter and can be on the ski hill for 4-5 hrs at a time. If I'm using a D4s or similar large pro camera with large buttons I can use regular leather ski gloves (Swany or Auclair). If a smaller camera with not as much finger room like a D500 I will use a thinner pair of gloves and keep a pair of chemical hand warmers in my pockets to use when I have any type of delay that will allow it. If I'm shooting around or above freezing (some MLS or football games) I will keep a pair of thin leather gloves in my pocket in case the temperature drops or the cold from the equipment begins to get to my hands. The key is to wear gloves that still allow you to feel the controls of your camera. Not always possible when well below freezing.
