p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Black Oystercatchers

Anyone who thinks that Black Oystercatchers do not have very bright red/orange bills, does not know what they are talking about.

I should mention that you will notice the pupils of some of these birds are not perfectly round. I have noticed this on many of the BO's around here. I do not know if this is an eye defect that affects their vision in any way.

Edit: Some discussion about the pupils here:

Nice images, Tony! I have noticed similar things about the pupils of Black Oystercatchers around where I live (just north of Seattle). I find it hard to believe that it does not affect their vision. Still, I have seen more than a few like this, and they all looked healthy to me.

I've seen research that the ones with flecks in their eyes are overwhelmingly female.

Here is the paper that talks about it.

Thanks, Guys. The first time I saw one with that eye condition I thought it was an isolated case. However, I see many of them with eyes like that and I don't think it affects their vision. Probably Nature trying out a new pupil design for some reason.

Nice photos Tony.

I have many weird pupils in my oystercatcher images from V.I. I also think you have portrayed the true colour of the beak accurately in these images....it is very bright, almost neon red/orange.

Thanks, Geoff. Yes, like many other birds, the colours and brightness of the bills depends on a number of factors. A duller bill with some dark grey on it indicates a juvenile Oystercatcher.
