A few more from Costa Rica at another time. All of these were from the west coast of the country. I was particularly chuffed to find and photograph a Lauging Falcon.

Looks warmer than here

Real nice job on the funny one Eric. Never knew they existed. The boat billed is great. Is that last critter an anteater?

Boat billed heron. Is he related to the shoe-bill stork?
Or is the laughing falcon related to the laughing gull?
I love those ancient looking animals, like the heron.
Pretty good for a non-bird guy!

Thanks Steve...got lucky with this one...paid for with lots of insect bites but it was worth it.

Thanks Tam...it is a beautiful bird...apparently its favorite prey is snakes

Thanks Louie...this is a very vocal bird as its name would suggest...found it by following its call...in Spanish its called Guaco

Thanks Morris...I was really happy to get a decent shot of this falcon...I had a long distance one from a prior trip but this one was very close...it was in some pretty thick woodland but the bird wasn't particularly skittish even though it liked to fly from tree to tree ostensibly looking for its favorite prey....snakes and poisonous ones at that! And that furry guy (or gal) is a coati or coatimundi which is more closely related to raccoons.

Thanks Ron....that falcon was my target for this area and was lucky to find it in a relatively clear area.

Haha...Wendell....yes, the time of day was not ideal and the falcon did not take direction well but as you know when you get the opportunity to photograph something you've never seen before the light be damned...just deal with it!

It is quite amazing how nature develops structures like that...and yes they are all related...all are long lost cousins of Archaeopteryx which if memory serves me correctly we saw not long ago in Winnipeg (too soon?
I was hoping to be a polar bear guy but the weather was unbearable so it seems

The falcon does not look amused in the slightest, Eric! What a great set! I've not been to CR but if this sample of biodiversity there is any indication, it seems like a naturalist's and photographer's paradise.

Beautifully done. Congrats on your findings and thanks for posting!

Thanks Kim...and yes, Costa Rica is a fabulous place for anyone who wants to see a large variety of avian, mammalian, amphibian and reptilian species close up and personal.
