so after a lot of internal debate and help from you guys, i decided to keep my 14-24 to use on my Sony 7Ar! just couldn't bring myself to sell it, and doubt i would find something sharper in that range

now i am looking to get another lens. Budget is around $300 or so, FL range is 28-85mm and doesn't need to be 2.8

I have searched around a bit, and saw a few lenses recommended; Zuiko 35-70 3.6, Minolta 35-70 3.4,
Tamron SP 35-80, C/Y Vario Sonar T 28-85 3.3-4.

The C/Y 28-85mm seems like a SUPERB lens, but the OM 35-70mm 3.6 also seems really nice. The OM runs $60-$100, whereas the C/Y is 3-4x the price.

should i just bite the bullet and get the C/Y *T? I know, i opened a can of worms when getting the A series, since there are a million lens choices

I did, but I enjoy Zeiss lenses. The zuiko is a more conservative zoom range, so you're getting both wider and longer with the C/Y. The biggest complaints about the C/Y is the minimum focus at 28mm (0.6m), size, and weight. It's a hefty lens with excellent image quality.

For about $300, I would recommend a Vario-Sonnar 3.4/35-70. It's an amazing performer, small, light, and great character.

If you had more cash, or found an amazing deal, the Vario-Sonnar 3.3-4.5/35-135 is great. It's also a fantastic personal defence weapon due to its weight and size.

Side note, the Vario-Sonnar 3.3-4/28-85 has some interesting distortion that may make it not worth it.

I owned the 28-85 on my 1Ds Mark II back in the day. It's a pretty good lens, weakest at 28mm, but still decent, and very good from 35 on. It is a heavy lens, though.

Yeah, I was going to say that. It's larger and heavier than my Canon EF 24-70/4L IS.

OTOH, the Contax 35-70/3.4 is also a very nice lens, and relatively small. Of course, then you'll be looking for something at 28mm and 85mm.

Contax 35-70 is great. Could also consider the Minolta 35-70 Macro, which is about 1/4 the price and 90% as good. https://www.adaptedlenses.com/lenses/12/2016

Contax 28-85 is said to be good but not quite as good as the 35-70 and much larger. Never shot it myself though.

I was just about to say the same thing. If it were me, I'd go for the C/Y or Minolta 35-70mm, but I could live with a gap between 24mm and 35mm, and the difference between 70mm and 85mm is small enough that it wouldn't make a significant difference in my images.

I liked my CY 28-85 a lot, but sold it to help funding the new Loxias some time ago.
It had some CA's @ 28 and was really big and heavy.
Some samples

I had an Olympus OM MC Zuiko 35-70mm f/3.6 and it was is a nice, compact little lens with a very clever lens hood. However, I found that it flares like that's its job! I'd get huge big flares any time there was any light source remotely close to a corner. I sold it. Also, optically, it was a film era lens that did OK stopped down on an A7, but was never awesome.

For around that price I would at least give the humble FE 28-70 kit lens a closer look.

I think it compares favourably to many old legacy zooms and is fast (enough) focusing, quiet AF and stabilized as well.

I had the FE 28-70 and now have the C/Y 35-70. The latter wins hands down on image quality, however it is MF and that makes it more deliberate to use. The image quality is stellar!

CZ VS28-85 is bigger than it is heavy, but you do pay a weight penalty for the metal build versus those modern plastic creations. Optically, it's a fine 3x standard zoom of its era, meaning you want to stop down to boost the edges and the linear distortion ranges from barrel to pincushion (the 4% @ 28mm is pretty obvious). My complaints with it are ergonomic: one-touch zoom design, full extension at 28 rather than 85mm.

My experience with them is that the MD 35-70 macro is good, the C/Y 35-70 is very good, better optically, but the ergonomics aren't (push-pull).
Far corners on the MD at 35mm leave something to be desired, hard to find fault with the C/Y at any setting, (stopped down).
The Leica 35-70/4 is rarely mentioned in comparisons, but the right version apparently "equals" the C/Y but with a different "look"

I agree with rdeloe about the OM 35-70/3.6, (I tried/tested 3 copies), even at its best, it isn't quite up to the standard of the above two...and it's the worst "dust-sucker" I've come across! Their "top" zoom was the OM Zuiko 35-80/2.8ED, but VERY expensive and I've never come across one.

First post. I have recently added E mount in going with a A7R. First lens purchase was the 35-70 3.4 C/Y along with a Novaflex adapter. First use was in our product photography. This is stunningly sharp at any aperture I have shot up to F13. I mean incredible and have yet to find any CA. I also did a shot of Orion with it wide open and could not find any coma.

Being an old Contax, Rollie sl66 and Rodenstock 4x5 guy, I must say that the first raw images popping up on my screen from this lens gave me the feeling of looking at 4x5's with a strong loupe. I always wanted this zoom even though I was a prime fan. I see what the big deal was now.

Count me as another Contax 35-70/3.4 fans (maybe except it's sun stars), but sometimes the range is a bit limited.

Thinking if I should pick up the 28-85/3.3-4 or wait for the Sigma 24-70/2.8 art.
