I've read that it gets a little soft in the corners when you use it with teleconverters.

Yeah, let's see...1200-1700mm with my 1.7x teleconverter is 2040-2890 mm, then with the 1.5x crop on the D500, we have 3060-4335mm full-frame equivalent and sharp corners!
