I been shooting at my feeder lately....

I think I need a hair light... tried one today... didn't always fire and when it did I didn;t like it... any tips for hair lighting, please drop a tip at my other post in lighting here:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1479381/

I stopped at a Michael's and purchased a few colored cards... some foam board, some picture mats... whatever I could get. Got a red, blue, dark green, lime green...... anyway, here are a few from the last few days.

Canon 5DSr, 600 II, cheapo Photolex remote trigger (works great!!!).

Tips for a hair light are appreciated... see link above.

Peace

The first two look great Burce. I've thought of setting up a studio as you have yet so far do it naturally around my feeder. I have experimented with slaving a flash and the extra light dose help. You needs some stands or branches to clip some lights to at the angles desired. Read up on key and fill light and also the Mccandliss method of stage lighting.

Thanx Morris,

I will look that stuff up; just what I was looking for.. thanx.

I processed one last night where the fill flash fired.... I have a 580EXII flash on a cheepie stand about 8 feet behind and about 3 feet above and to the side (more to the back). The flash was set for 1/4 power .... I think it was too bright as I had to drop the highlights slider in LR.

I fired the flash using Yongnuo transmitters... I was in NYC and had a few beers at lunch with my niece.. then went into B&H... bad decision..... and I took their recommendations for some stands, transmitters and some other stuff... read about my adventure here where I include prices... http://travelthroughpictures.com/photo-items/home-studio-equipment/

The flash would not fire all the time and then would randomly fire..... I assumed it was the transmitters but as it turned out, the bottom of the transmitter was shorting against a tiny screw ... I had a cheepie clamp I purchased from China on eBay... One day I went on eBay and purchased a handful of little clamps, bits and bobs for a few bucks... well you get what you pay for..... anywhoo.... I now jammed a little card in there as insulation.. better results expected.

See below with hair light..... my first attempt with this type of flash usage.

Oh and I did apply a bunch of LR processing and my ambient light would change with the clouds, I had the camera in manual, and this was way underexposed......

Peace

That's interesting, and you are getting pretty good results from your setup. However, I'd suggest that you use that large bush as the background generator, and not the coloured screens. If you place your setup 10 ft or so in front of the bush, the 600 should generate sufficiently nice and naturally looking background blur/ bokeh.
IMO monotone backgrounds given by coloured screens look even more artificial than "vapourizing" the background using Gaussian blur in post-processing.

I did use that bush before.... here are some from a while ago with my 5D MK II and 500mm gen I...

Read about this setup here: http://travelthroughpictures.com/photo-items/backyard-birds-feeder-shooting/

But I kinda like the solid backgrounds..... something different.
