Yeah, me too for what seems like so long (like the forever of waiting for a Nikon 135). But the more time that passes I honestly wonder if 50mm is just too not-anything-specific. It ain't wide. It ain't long. Even if I had a nicer 50 (I have the 50 1.4 D - yawn) I wonder how much I'd use it.
Anything ART weighs as much as anything. It's a physics mystery. Pick one up and compare it to anything. Yep, weighs as much as a 24-70.
My sofa?... yep, weighs as much as that. Midsize SUV's?... my 35 Art weighs more.
It's like lifting a lens on Jupiter and should probably be co-branded with Waterford and their leaded crystal.

I've struggled with the 50mm focal length for a few years, not really using it. I blamed it on lenses, trying out the range of Nikon 50's. I got the 50 Art this year and have been using it almost exclusively for personal & family stuff. I finally get it, and I love it. It holds a similar place in my heart (and lens bag) to the way I feel about my 85 f/1.4d. To be honest, it makes more sense by itself than it does shooting 2 cameras. If you have one body, a 50 is a pretty good place to be. 35/50 or 50/85 or whatever doesn't work for me. I did an in-home engagement last week in a smaller house from the 30s. I shot most of it with the 28 f/1.8g on one body and the 50 Art on the other. Love it.
I've got my first wedding this weekend since I got the 50 Art, so I'm curious to see where I use it and where it makes sense. If you get a sharp copy of it, there is some magic for sure. In the right sized space, I am thinking 50 on the wide side and 180 on the other body might be a good pairing. Good stuff.
