Does it makes sense to have a 24-70
And a 35 prime? I mean I'd love to have them all but I may sell the 24-70 and get the new 35 to go with me 85.

Yes. I own all 3.

In this industry, the 24-70 has fallen out of favor in recent years, but it's just a more relaxing experience from a work perspective. The 35/85 combo, be it on 2 bodies or switching lenses, is much more "work". So unless I have to be at 1.4 or 2, I usually shoot with the 24-70 if that focal range is needed quickly.

Yea sure! I work mostly with the 24-70 on one cam and a 85 on the other during the day. But during the shoot I use the 35 & 85 together.

I love the 24-70L II so much — we have two. God that's a great lens.

Zooms are so good now, the only reason not to shoot one is to save weight.

There are time in the day where the 24-70 just rocks it.
For me the entrance straight into first dance is a great example.

Able to get wide, mid range and a short tele shots in a fast sequence.

Yes to having all 3 lenses.
I think I am upgrading to the VII this year. I need an expense for taxes.

I really lust for an awesome 50. If I had a 50 I loved I'd rest the 24-70 and shoot mostly 16-35 / 50 / 100 (or 135).

Last week I tried my forth 50L and had a shoot off between it, a 50Art, 50STM, and the 24-70L II.

50L > great bokeh, but wicked soft below ƒ2 and poor CA in the aperture settings you want to use
50Art > sharp with low CA but it's not magic (to me) and it weighs as much as the 24-70
50STM > at ƒ2 the CA is lower than the 50L and it's almost as sharp — busy bokeh, though.
24-70L II > sharp, great bokeh, low CA

For now, I'm sticking with the 24-70 and will use the STM for drunk dancing when I'm tired of the zoom weight. If the Art weighed closer to what the old Sigma 50 weighed, I'd probably just make peace with it.

In the past I had bad real-world focusing issues with the Canon 50/1.4 and Sigma legacy 50. Now with the 5d4's I'm tempted to try both again.

I'd LOVE a Batis 50 for Canon. Dear Santa ...

Getting an a7r2 just for the Zeiss 55 would be crazy.

(PS - not a typo. I have owned four 50L's)

All three! They all have their pros and cons, and having all of them gives you back up gear and/or lenses for a second shooter.

Yeah, me too for what seems like so long (like the forever of waiting for a Nikon 135). But the more time that passes I honestly wonder if 50mm is just too not-anything-specific. It ain't wide. It ain't long. Even if I had a nicer 50 (I have the 50 1.4 D - yawn) I wonder how much I'd use it.

Anything ART weighs as much as anything. It's a physics mystery. Pick one up and compare it to anything. Yep, weighs as much as a 24-70.

My sofa?... yep, weighs as much as that. Midsize SUV's?... my 35 Art weighs more.

It's like lifting a lens on Jupiter and should probably be co-branded with Waterford and their leaded crystal.

Last year I forced myself to start shooting more in the middle. Too many years of seeing all the 80mm/Contax645 shooters get all the wedding publication space. Give 'em what they want (minus the PITA film part). I have to remind myself that a 50A on a 5D4 weighs much less than a 645/80 combo.

I sold my two 24-70 Nikons to reduce weight and space in my kit. They are incredible lenses, very fast AF and sharp. I now shoot primarily with the 35 and 85 f1.8 and at times with a 35 and 70-200. I actually like the reach of an 85, I often felt limited by the long end of the 24-70. If I need wider I also have the 24 f1.8.

I've struggled with the 50mm focal length for a few years, not really using it. I blamed it on lenses, trying out the range of Nikon 50's. I got the 50 Art this year and have been using it almost exclusively for personal & family stuff. I finally get it, and I love it. It holds a similar place in my heart (and lens bag) to the way I feel about my 85 f/1.4d. To be honest, it makes more sense by itself than it does shooting 2 cameras. If you have one body, a 50 is a pretty good place to be. 35/50 or 50/85 or whatever doesn't work for me. I did an in-home engagement last week in a smaller house from the 30s. I shot most of it with the 28 f/1.8g on one body and the 50 Art on the other. Love it.

I've got my first wedding this weekend since I got the 50 Art, so I'm curious to see where I use it and where it makes sense. If you get a sharp copy of it, there is some magic for sure. In the right sized space, I am thinking 50 on the wide side and 180 on the other body might be a good pairing. Good stuff.

I worked for newspapers for almost a decade and 24-70/70-200 with two bodies was the standard kit. Long glass for sports was really all you needed. As I started shooting weddings I noticed how much difference there was when you could open up past 2.8. So I added a 35 and 85.

I was able to shoot 80%+ on those two primes, but I was still using the zooms as a crutch (mostly for 24 and 200 sides). This past year I added the 24, 50 and the 135. With that setup I really never used the zooms at all. Ended up selling both of them this winter. I still carry a 24-85 as a worst-case scenario backup, but with the 5-prime setup I'm set.

No one really wants to shoot a 24-70 over a prime, they're just so damn useful. Especially if you're in a situation with limited movement. I only shoot the 24-70 when I have to, but if I could only choose one wedding lens, I guess that'd be the one. Wouldn't be much fun though 😂

But to answer the original question, yeah you want all three lenses. Not necessarily in that order, another lens, like a 70-200 probably should come first. But hey the good news is, with all these 24-70 options now, you can get a good one used, cheap. And don't forget there's about to be a Sigma Art 24-70 with OS 😳
