Ok, I've had time to shoot both the 70-400 G2 with e-mount adapter and the 70-200 GM with 2x teleconverter. Both lenses were shot on my A7II handheld and on a tripod. It's obvious that the 70-400 is better in image quality and focusing. IQ on the 70-200 with 2x is good, but the 70-400 is better overall at all focal lengths and apertures. I might also mention that the IQ on the 70-200 2.8 GM without the teleconverter is as good as any I've ever seen on a 70-200 zoom lens. Focusing speed is about the same on the 70-200 with 2x as the 70-400 G2 up until f11. Then, for some reason, the 70-200 with 2x tends to hunt before settling on focus. It did this outside on a sunny day with the subjects in indirect and in mostly direct sunlight. The 70-400 G2 had no trouble focusing on the same subjects. My conclusion is that the 70-400 G2 is the obvious winner here. Since I already have the 70-400 I will be keeping it and using it when I need something in the 200-400mm range. The only reason I can see using the 70-200 with 2x is for travel when you just don't want to carry two telephoto lenses. I might buy the 2x some time in the future if I find a deal on it. But, hopefully, by then Sony will have more long teles available in e-mount.

I'm curious what you think of this image from another review of the lens with 2x TC I came across... the extreme edges aren't great but most of the rest of the frame is very sharp.

Here's a 100% crop of the center, but it looks sharper than this in Capture One Pro. Flickr isn't doing it full justice, you really should download the RAW file.
