Hi everyone. I’m new here …signed up about 2 - 3 weeks ago.

It appears that the Sekonic L-758DR-U light meter has been discontinued; B&H and Adorama show it that way. Perhaps a refresh is coming? I may need to contact Sekonic to find out. Thanks.

What is the "U" designator for? I've never seen this before.

The plain old 758, and 758DR..yes, but never a U. Can you explain?

this I believe is for US/North America designation due to the radio freqs used in wireless operation.

On difference between the L-758R and L-758R-U, this is what Sekonic told me:

"There is no difference between the two meters. The “U” designation was recently added to distinguish the meters legally sold in the United States from the gray market products that enter the country illegally. For any purchase starting now and in the future, make sure you have a “U” meter so it can be covered by warranty."

...and on why it is listed as discontinued and/or not available from authorized distributors, this is what they said:

"The Sekonic 858D will eventually replace the L-758. This meter will be available this spring."

Below is the link for the new model L-858D-U, which will have touch screen. This -U model will be for the U.S. market I believe. Hope that helps.

The reason I had responded to this with the original question was.. I own and use this meter with regularity here, and had never heard of the "U" designator before. I DO however remember talking with Sekonic reps about the replacement, and no news was given as to it's model number etc.

To me, this just looks like a digital overhaul to bring it into the newer look. I highly doubt anything could have been improved. Back in the day, I needed two meters with functions like spot and overall.. this meter I have does all that really quite well, along with profiles for the different models I own as far as cameras.

Thanks for the link and info.

No problem!

I have been wanting to replace my aging L-508 for sometime now. It still works very well, but it has limitations. It only does half and full stops, for example. No third stops, and no camera profiles.

The L-758DR looks pretty solid as far as functionality goes. And Like you, I too doubt much can be done to improve its feature set aside from a new look and touch screen integration. However, since I don’t have it, might as well wait and buy the new one.

The C-7000 looks like it would be more fun to play with than an L-758 or L-858. Might not improve the exposures but they'll be the right colours
