The new Sigma lenses were already added to B&H Photo and Adorama pages. They are now available for pre-order:

  1. Sigma 14mm f/1.8 at B&H Photo and Adorama.

  2. Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 B&H Photo and Adorama.

  3. Sigma 135mm f/1.8 at B&H Photo and Adorama.

  4. Sigma 100-400mmm B&H Photo and Adorama.

If the 135 had OS I'd be all over it.

If I knew exactly when I could preorder the 135 I'd set an alarm. Even if it was the middle of the night I would get up and buy it.

Tested the 200 f2 for two weeks. I almost talked myself into it, but in the end it was just too impractical. Then Nikon launched the 105 and I thought maybe that was as close as I could get to the look of the 200 f2. But for some reason I didn't buy it. Now here's Sigma with a 135 1.8. I really think this is the one!!!

And honestly, I'm curious as F about that 24-70. I'm going to wait, maybe, for reviews. But here's my hunch: Sigma 24-70 OS > Nikon 24-70 VR. Buy Sigma. Sell Nikon used. Prophet money. That's just my hunch.

I have preordered the 135mm (emailed my dealer immediately after reading the announcement).

I am delighted that it doesn't have IS / OS / VR / whatever.

@ohsnaphappy - I owned the Canon 200mm f/2 for some years. Didn't use it a lot because it was so heavy. Got some good images with it, though.

Does anyone pre-order without knowing a price?

I'm definitely leaning toward the Sigma 24-70 over the Nikon VR at the moment. If the 24-70E was on the same level as the 70-200E I'd stick to Nikon but unfortunately it's not even close.

Damn, I was hoping they'd've had released pricing by now .

Nikon's going to be in a weird position here if the Sigma lens is competitive in terms of AF. It's not likely to eclipse the Nikon lens (or Sony's GM or Canon's impending update), but if they can make it quick enough and repeatably accurate, they'll likely steal quite a few sales.

If you don't have to put any cash down (or can get a deposit fully refunded if you change your mind), then pre-ordering is no big deal. If you're pretty sure you're going to want the product as soon as possible, then might as well get your name in line if there's no risk involved.

Isn't this 135mm f1.8 going to have the same issue re heaviness?

Just don't preorder if you live in Canada as they charge you in full immediately and if you cancel you lose money on the forex. I learned this the hard way with the 5D3. But I guess they need a price first in order to charge you.

I can see that point but I guess I'm the type that would wait to see user reviews before buying a new product, so getting one as soon as it comes out isn't high on the list.

The problem with the 200 is that it is just too big. I rented one for several days and realized that it was too much for the kind of portraiture I want to do. You need a long working distance and be comfortable with a 6lb lens on you camera (something that I could not get used to, and neither could my subjects). The 105 is darn close (I have one), but I think that 135 might be even better!

It's heavy though... 2.5lbs is heavier than the Nikon 105!

Normally I just buy used gear, rarely buy new, and have never pre-ordered without seeing a price. The Sigma lens I'm interested in is so unique and the specs are exactly what I want, and I've had only great luck with Sigma lenses. So, for the first time ever, I will pre-order when that becomes available. My fear is Sigma will have trouble keeping up with demand for quite some time.

The 200 F2 is a great lens. The Sigma 85 1.4 is sharp and is great. The Canon EF 85 1.2LII is a lens that has that character and sharpness which is distinct. The Canon 200F2 is lighter than the Nikon version and isn't that heavy to me.

the 24-70 and the 135 have the big 82mm filter threads to boot ha.

honestly I always wait for reviews, and this case is no exception. Most of the newer stuff I buy has been on the market for at least a year. And then I buy used, much like Kent (Two23).

Is there any math that can be done to compare 105 @ 1.4 to 135 @ 1.8 ?

Sigma is so mickey mouse. I guess they want to set their price based on the amount of pre-orders.

I found a calculator. Turns out 135 has less DOF then 105. Could mean nicer bokeh. We'll see.

Depth of field is relative to max aperture diameter and focus distance, so it's likely that you'll get very similar background blur with more depth of field but more compression from the 135 with the same framing, as you'll be further away.

105mm/1.4 = 75mm
135mm/1.8 = 75mm

The max aperture diameter/entrance pupil diameter is actually the same between the two, so Nikon's 105/1.4E actually makes a bit of sense, as the natural working distance (based on field of view) of the 105 is going to be a little less than a 135, weight is going to be a little lower, size is going to be a little lower, and the lens will be a little more accessible to DX shooters while not losing much if anything to a fast 135.
