I wasn't saying it was a definitive source, nor was I trying to say it's a clone. Actually doesn't look far off when you see the lens mounted, looks bigger than in the stand alone lens shots.

As to what product they were referencing, they talk about the 35/1.4 being a re-housing as well on a seperate slide, they were definitely referencing the 40 here.

I know at least one poster here was going to be at CP+, maybe they can inquire and give us (me?) some closure. All that aside the one RAW I've seen draws an awfully lot like the 35/1.2, regardless the lens design.

Most likely a typo and they meant that the 35 Nokton is based on an older VM lens.

Edit: Or it's the 35/1.2, but it doesn't make sense since the 40 is shorter.

Yes, but it could also be the 35/1.2 that is "tweaked" so much that it's not really the same lens anymore, even if the basic design is very similar. I think I remember the 35 to be a bit narrower than many other 35:s, so it's not impossible that even the FL is the same.
And you might be right about the length and size as well. The lens is obviously larger than it looks on its own.

However, with such a large exit pupil, the bokeh could be affected by the sensor stack, so it's possible that it will draw differently on the Sony cameras even if they just changed minor things to adapt it better to the new environment.

I guess there will be plenty of sample images soon, and then we'll find out.

I asked Barney about that and he said it was only from the super bad translation of the press release (the one we have all seen) and that he's not at all sure it's right. And my reading of the press release is tha the 35 only is a mod of a previous design for FE.

Anyhow, we'll likely know for sure before handing over our money!

I have my eyes on that 40mm f/1.2, hopefully it has the mojo.

a 40/1.2 sounds awesome, and about time.

it's really hard to believe the sizes of the 35/1.4 & 40/1.2 in the photos will be accurate though. way too short for each.

My Canon S 50/1.2 LTM is shorter I think.

My guess, based on the bokeh in the wide open sample, is that it is based on the 35/1.2.

I've got a Voigtlander 40/1.4 and the 35/1.2. The 35/1.4 is a modified 40/1.4, and if you look around the web you'll see that it has similar bright edges to the bokeh balls, while the 35/1.2 has onion ring bokeh. The 35/1.2 has pretty good wide open sharpness, but suffers from onion ring bokeh - which seems to match what we're seeing and being promised.

I'm heading to CP+ from now, will chat with Cosina staff there and ask whether the 40/1.2 is an entirely new design or based on 35/1.2 Nokton. Hopefully those demo units are also available for hands on trials... It may be pretty crowded there today.

Onion ring bokeh can be expected just from the fact that it's an aspherical design - which we know from the name. It's unclear if Cosina has access to the super smooth aspherical mouldings (Sony) or polishing ((Panny) that mitigate the onion rings.

Spoke with 2 Cosina guys at the Voigtländer counter at CP+ and they said the 40/1.2 has no relation at all to the 35/1.2 M design and that it's a completely new design. It's not really smaller than 35/1.2 (could be slightly shorter but its' diameter is larger), but at least the demo version is considerably lighter. We compared the weights side by side (to 35/1.2 v2 without any adapters) and the 40/1.2 demo version felt about 100g lighter. They couldn't say anything about the official weight or release date or price. I managed to take some trial shots with both the 40mm and 65mm at the counter, not much targets to shoot there though... Still at CP+.

Good news Juha!
Gosh at 100g lighter than the old 1.2/35 and my favourite normal fl, if it's a new design as good as the 1,7/35 stopped down and usable wide open it could be my new favourite standard. My only fear is that it's a bit too small to be great for an f1.2!

D.C. Watch Impress, one of the premier Japanese photo news sites, had a hands on with the new CV lenses. The APO Lanthar and 1.2/40 are close to ready and will sell in Japan for under about US 1300 each. The 1.4/35 classic is further away, but will be quite a bit cheaper. Here's a google translation of what they say about the 40

http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/eventreport/1046053.html

"Large aperture lens excellent in portability, based on the concept of "compact and high performance". We also adopt aspheric lenses, aiming at modern high performance lenses. As well as Macro Apolanter 65 mm, we aim to sell this year under 150,000 yen"

I put some samples taken at Cosina Voigtländer demo counter at CP+ with my A7II + Voigtländer 40/1.2 here, including original RAW + JPEG:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B0BYrcxVNFdPUUNTMERiaFpTT0E?usp=sharing

9099 f1.2 very close
9105 f1.2 close
9110 f1.2 very close
9111 f2.8 very close
9985 f1.2 close
9989 f1.2 close
9994 f1.2 close
0009 f4 infinity
0013 f8 infinity
0018 f2.8 infinity
0022 f4 infinity
0026 f2 close
0028 f1.2 close
0030 f1.4 close
0031 f2 close
0036 f2 close
0046 f1.2 close

I really liked the lens based on this demo, very nice size & weight, great handling, infinity was spot on on this demo lens (I like it when hard infinity gives the best sharpness at "infinity" and there's no need to pull back). Great sunstars as usual with Voigtländer. I also think it's plenty sharp from wide open at the focused point. I also think there's not much field curvature, at least much less than with Ultron 35/1.7. I'm certainly going to buy this 40mm when they release it.

I tried it only rather briefly, and not so seriously as I was much more keen on 40mm since it would work nicely for me as a daily walkaround lens and I have less personal need for the 65mm macro (I already have the FE 90/2.8 macro and I don't shoot macro that much). In any case the 65mm seemed also like a fine lens with great build and handling and IQ seemed to be excellent based on very brief sampling. It extends quite a lot when focusing close. I was thinking about it also for general use (especially before the 40mm got announced) but if they are both going to be somewhere around 125 to 150K yen, I'll most likely just get the 40mm as it fits my needs much better.

I have a few demo counter snapshots taken with it also, will put them in Google Drive on Sunday morning Japan time as it's running late here now...

Hey Juha - Thank you for all the 40/1.2 images!

Exif, distance reporting and such is nice to have. The image quality, judging by the samples is pretty good. Good enough? Maybe. In my opinion they should have made the lens a little slower focusing more on micro-contrast and chromatic aberrations than on speed. Perhaps the f/1.2 is about bragging rights and a high price tag?
