p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D7200+300f2.8+2XTC or D500+200-500 f5.6 for birds and mammals...

Hi friends,
Need some suggestions regarding the best handholdable combo for birds ( mostly songbirds) and mammals ( in national parks) for my friend here. Maximum total weight should be around 3 kgs as he is advised against carrying much weight by doctors.
So I have initially suggested D500+200-500 or D7200+300f2.8+1.4/2X TC. He is having D7100+ Sigma 50-500mm combo at present, which he wants to upgrade from. He had 300mmf4(non-VR)+1.4X TC combo in the past, which he sold off some time back.
Any inputs regarding the AF speed and reliability with D7200+300/f2.8+2X TC vis-a-vis that of D500+200-500f5.6 would be highly appreciated.
Need your advise regarding what would be the suitable choice for him.He has an upcoming birding (mainly) trip in April'2017 in the Himalayas. Any other viable suggestions would also be accepted.

Thanks

Anindya.

One can't beat the D500/200-500 combo for a lightweight BIF/wildlife rig.
I sure wouldn't want to be limited to 300 or 600mm using the prime.

.....thanks , I felt the same,.... but knowing about the low-lights issues one might face, especially in the afternoons due to whimsical weather there, I had suggested the other option i,e, D7200+300f2.8+1.4X tc.
It would be 300*1.4@ f4 vs 500 f5.6. Also that 4mp more (24mp of 7200 vs 20mp of D500) sensor might provide a tad better cropability factor.

.... yeah that too should be a great combo, but finding a descent (used) 300f2.8 here, might be really difficult.

I've been thinking about purchasing the 2x TC for my 300 2.8 VR lens, but at almost half the price of a new Nikon 200-500mm I can't substantiate it.

It would be 450 f4 vs 500 f5.6. Also that 4mp more (24mp of 7200 vs 20mp of D500) sensor might provide a tad better cropability factor.
Well, it'd be 420 f4 that I usually stop down to f5 for better IQ.
The difference in MP's is ~3 and a moot point re: croppin'. Then there's the weight.
I shoot with all the gear in question and I know what I'd be taking along with me.
The D500's AF is unrivaled in the field.

I have both... the 300mm f/2.8 + 1.4x is sharper than the 200-500mm VR, but the zoom lens is more flexible and easier to shoot handheld.

Both will get the job done.
D7200 = more MP.
D500 Higher FPS and superior AF (speed and accuracy).
300 2.8 = Better IQ.
200-500 = versatility and much less weight.
Mostly a matter of how much $$ you want to invest.

If you use a Nikon 1.4x you'll be shooting at f8 with the lens wide open plus a knock down in the focusing speed. Not the best combination.

..... as many others would suggest, a tc is good in good light, but .....
I've used 1.4XTCII with 200-500, the results were so-so, & at the end decided not to invest in a tc.Better to crop than to ...
1. loose 1 stop of light and fullest advantage of f5.6.
2. loose IQ
3. loose AF speed

My testing of TC on 200-500 under very controlled conditions showed the image without was better with a heavier crop than the image with the TC with a smaller crop (creating same framing of my subject after cropping each).

Personally, I would go D500 and 300/2.8 with the TCs. The 200-500 IQ is good but its just not even close to prime quality. That said, I don't actually have experience with Nikon's 300/2.8 but I can't see it being any different from the Canon 300/2.8 and 400DOII which I do have plenty of experience with.

I will have a chance to shoot the 300/2.8VRII in 3 weeks in CR borrowing from a fellow photographer on our trip. I'm hoping it brings the D500's AF response up to what I'm used to with Canon (I've heard it will). Also hoping for a significant IQ improvement. I'm debating getting a used 300VRII and getting rid of the 200-500. Or alternatively will sell off all my Nikon investment.

I have exactly these two combos, mostly for birding:
D7200 + 200-500/5.6E
and
D7200 + TC20EIII + 300/2.8 G VR1

And I just tell you that I am in the brink of selling my trusty but heavier and worse VR 300/2.8G VRI...
