A side note just for fun.
I have the EF1.4x from 1990, the Mark II from about 2000, and the Mark III from a couple of years ago. All take the same AFMA setting on all of the relevant lenses, from a 1990 600/4L, to a 2000 400/2.8 L IS to a 2016 500/4L IS ii, and the 70-200/2.8L IS and 100-400 L IS ii. I can see no optical difference between them even with some serious pixel peeping.
The Mark III is the one to get if you have one of the Mark II great whites because of the faster and more consistently accurate focusing and if you have one of the latest bodies which can benefit from its internal computer chip. But if not, it seems the converters are very durable and consistent and an older model used might save some bucks while offering the same performance as a new late model.
