p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Cheap accommodation Corkscrew Swamp/Ding Darling

Posted this on the Nature forum, it's been suggested this would be a better place for it -

Getting excited here, arranging a short-notice trip to Florida from Scotland and planning some bird photography at Sanibel & Corkscrew. It's about 15 years since I last visited, can't remember exactly where we stayed, but looking at online prices for Hampton Inns etc gave me a shock.

Can anyone recommend decent cheap accommodation nearby? Doesn't need to be fancy, just clean and safe. Help appreciated!

Ken

When I went down a couple years ago I stayed at
La Quinta
4850 S Cleveland Ave, Fort Myers, FL 33907.
It was a little cheaper, AND available in winter.

As long as you leave early, traffic to Sanibel shouldn't be too bad.
Careful with tolls lacking personell and rental cars.
This also puts you close to Coral Gables and their burrowing owls, or a straight shot up to the Venice Rookery.

La Quinta down by Naples is reasonable and close to Corkscrew. Ditto on leaving EARLY to go across causeway to Darling. Note: it will take you 2+ hours to drive from Darling to the Venice Rookery Have fun, Ron

Depending on how much you are willing to rough it, you can just rent a full size SUV and sleep in the back. There are tons of BLM areas out here in the West where you can always sleep for free, I suspect that Florida is not quite that way. You can try freecampsites.net which also lists locations that will tolerate overnighting in the car.

If anyone's interested, I booked the Suburban Hotel Fort Myers based on a recommendation in another forum. Anything cheaper had a much lower review ratings and several had terrible recent comments.

Thanks again everyone, and Florida here I come!
