i had to laugh earlier when you said neither of the new lenses interested you and nearly posted a wager by what page you'd start having some issue with an existing lens - i would have at least taken the over on page 2. but i still don't see the anxiety of you parting w/ your 85GM (or are you referring to your ZM?)......yet

serious Q - was the 70-200GM "much" faster (i think it might be) at focusing than the 85?

I'm waiting to see how the FE85 1.8 compares to the Batis, and if it compares favorably not going to be too happy about having paid a good bit more for my Batis.

I too would like to see a good 135. The 100 is going to be interesting as an STF lens, but it's too close to the 85 to tempt me a lot. Now a 135 that would be different.

I'm thinking as a budget kit.

FE 28mm F2
FE 50mm 1.8
FE 85mm 1.8

I would be all over a 135mm 1.8 or F2 :-) I wish the 50mm 1.8 would be more like the 28mm as far as being silent in focusing. THis would be a nice small inexpensive kit for those of us that don't have G money :-)

i'm not concerned about depth of field of "only" f/2.8
or shutter speed in daylight at T 5.6

but what about the a7r2's auto-focusing capabilities at T 5.6 ?
is this going to be a lot of hunting and slow focusing?

The 100 uses a fancy AF system.... So I'm guessing it'll be fast and accurate.
The 85 has "Double Linear AF" motor. Is this internal AF? Will it be fast, or will it be like the 50/1.8FE?

Yeah, internal AF driven by two motors like the FE 70-200 f4. So should be on par with those lenses is my guess. Doesn't look like Sony used any aspherics but it isn't an adapted design like the 50 1.8 or 50 macro. Interesting choices...

The 50mm 1.8 is not a terribly sharp lens wide open so I am somewhat skeptical but we shall see.

I'm hoping the new 100mm STF will have strong flare performance since that seems to be the biggest downfall of the current STF lenses in the market.

I'm skeptical given how recessed the front element looks.

Keep in mind this is the straight Sony announcement. I think we can expect that there may be a Sony/Zeiss announcement sometime this Spring--here is where I expect a 135 f/2 or maybe f/1.8. I think Zeiss will make their own announcement too. From Zeiss I expect a 35 f/1.8 Batis and a 28 Loxia (I am guessing f/2.4 to match the 85). If those three lenses materialize the biggest holes will be filled, IMO.
I would still love to see a small Sony/Zeiss series with a 20 f/2.8, a 28 f/2.8, and a 100 f/2 added to the 35 f/2.8 and the 55 f/1.8.

The Batis 85 and the Sony 85/1.8 FE are actually quite similar, remove lens elements number 6 and 7 counted from the front of the lens from the Batis 85 and you have the schematic layout of the Sony 85/1.8 FE. Further the Sony 85/1.8 FE has only one ED glass compared to three "anomalous dispersion" glasses for the Batis 85. My guess is that the image stabilizer group in the Batis

My point was that both new FE 85/1.8 and Batis have a lot in common.
They are both light (Batis 100g heavier), absent of asphericals (Which helps bokeh) and are pretty compact.

The Batis has more exotic glass but the new FE does not have a stabilization group (which improves IQ)
It will be interesting to test them side by side.

I think Sony shooters are covered for the 85-90mm focal length.
We have Batis, GM, G-Macro, Loxia and now plain-vanilla FE.

In fact the 50/1.8 FE and the 50/2.8 FE are not adapted designs.

The optics of the 50/2.8 FE macro has no resemblance of the optics in the 50/2.8 A mount macro lens. It's an all new design in the 50/2.8 FE macro, which is good.

The 50/1.8 FE while looking like DSLR design doesn't require the long back focal distance of a DSLR 50/1.8.

That's what I'm thinking. For me, it'd be 28/2, 55/1.8, 85/1.8. I have the 85 GM and it's just too big to lug around. I was thinking about the Batis but now I'm going to wait and see....

And BTW Sony, I'm also waiting for a 135/2 :-)

I agree with you. I wanted to point out how very similar the optical layouts of the two lenses are Actually I had expected the optical layouts to be more different than they are. I should post the lens schematics, but I have to be in front of my Mac to do that, not the ipad.

agree (if you mean that you weren't a fan of the batis 85 swirly bokeh, which is why i gave up on it and it's very easy to use form factor for the 85GM, which is a perfect IQ lens IMHO but i didn't want to heavy lugs right next to each other at 50 & 85)

each passing year now we have more and more focal lengths with a variety of options based on IQ, style preference, price, size/weight.

But nothing really high quality (from Sony) outside of the 35mm to 85mm focal length range... it makes me think I should just track down a nice copy of the Olympus 35-80mm f2.8 and be done with it.

If the Sony FE 85/1.8 is a good performer, then with that plus a 28mm Loxia I'm done and dusted. I'll have the 28, 50/55, and 85/90 focal lengths covered five ways: FE, Loxia, Leica R, Contax C/Y, and M-Hexanon.

A budget 85/1.8 was one they had to make. We have a nice solid affordable 28, 50, 85 combo now.

I'm surprised to see a specialty lens like the 100 STF when there are so many more common lenses missing from the lineup, but can't complain about more lenses.

I've become addicted to EyeAF for portraits and other relatively close people work and I've got some great manual focus 85, 90 and 100mm lenses that are great for landscape. So, if the new 85 is good for portraits, I won't care much about performance at a distance, corners at wide apertures, micro contrast, etc. I'd be happy to have a good AF portrait lens that is not too huge.

Well it's T-Stop is slower
And that's because it has a stronger apodization filter than the 135 for a slightly stronger effect; perhaps because of the slightly shorter focal length.

I could get on board with the new 85mm. I really like my Batis 85, and it is incredibly sharp, but I don't shoot it all that often. If the new 85 FE has decent AF and image quality, I might trade down for the cost and weight savings...

Interesting; really very different rear groups indeed. The Batis makes more use of cemented elements it would seem, and cuts down the number or air-glass surfaces.
