Completely different tools for different needs.

I'm hoping the new 100mm STF will have strong flare performance since that seems to be the biggest downfall of the current STF lenses in the market.

I imagine some of the cameras will struggle to AF with the T5.6 in low light - but it's nice to see they put a convenient AF/MF switch on the side of the lens so there's no menu diving required to switch over to MF when the AF fails.

All about Portrait today, 100mm STF for the highend, 85mm F1.8 for the low end and a new flash.

I don't need either, I want both!

decisions decisions ,
I like my old FD 1.2 L but it still needs fixing and I love my EF 100 f2.

The Canon 100 is faster and smaller/lighter and I can use it across systems but on my A7s it is slow AF (fast AF on m4/3).

On an A7s least, I think the 100 STF will be a nice indoor lens and a fantastic concert/stage lens as long as flare is not that big an issue.

Maybe I should just settle for the 85.

Thing is though, I could happily find a reason for fixing my FD and keeping the EF 100 and getting both of these. GAS GAS GAS!

Honestly guys, I'd much rather have a 135/2 GM instead.
I'm hoping Zeiss will have a Batis on that range soon.

That, and a Batis 15mm f2.8 would be nice...

That was my first thought! the 100mm is not a replacement for the 85mm 1.4 , IMHO, as it is too slow so I would have preferred it to be 135mm as to owning both. Now their focal range is too close for my taste and for the money..still interested in seeing some images from users!

YES, 135 in a Batis form/size factor b/c I know I'd never lug a 135GM around.

I find the new FE 85/1.8 interesting. It's lighter than the Batis and also absent from aspherical elements.
It does not have FLE but should perform very well at portrait distances. The computer generated MTF looks good but it's hard to tell how these lenses will compare. It costs almost half the price.

The Batis 85 is better than the GM in most regards other than the Bokeh. I don't think the Sony 85 1.8 will be near the Batis in terms of image quality, focus speed, build quality, etc.

The Batis 85/1.8 does not have an aspherical lens element. The Sony 85/1.8 FE seems to be an internal focus design, and is as such a FLE design. The Batis 85 and the Sony 85/1.8 FE are actually quite similar, remove lens elements number 6 and 7 counted from the front of the lens from the Batis 85 and you have the schematic layout of the Sony 85/1.8 FE. Further the Sony 85/1.8 FE has only one ED glass compared to three "anomalous dispersion" glasses for the Batis 85. My guess is that the image stabilizer group in the Batis 85, is what's removed in the Sony 85/1.8 FE. It will be interesting to see how these two lenses compare.

I think that the new Sony 85/1.8 FE is interesting when constructing a travel kit, Sony FE, 28/2, 50/1.8 or 50/2.8 macro and the new 85/1.8.

And thats the problem..how can they please everyone? I want a 135mm but as I am not a fan of swirly bokeh and love 11 blades of goodness...a GM would be great for me. Sony has a tough job ahead

The 85 1.8 just might bring a whole lot more people to Sony.

Ok, I can see some people just buying just the new 85 1.8 and an A7ii or even original A7 as a portrait outfit.

It might not be the BEST combination but it will still be very nice and at a price a lot more could afford.

Almost like an updated Canon 85 1.8. The biggest issue with the Canon seems to be purple fringing. The Extra low dispersion element in this might make all the difference.

Maybe Canon will update their 85 1.8 soon (before I buy this) which would make the choice harder for me.

This again?? the Batis is better in price and size, thats it. It has been measured and tested already..give it up now people. You love your Batis..great, but it seems that every Batis owner I see making a comment needs to follow up attacking the GM. Its intriguing to say the least....

If the FE 85/1.8 is good optically and has fast and accurate AF, I'll probably get that to replace my Canon 100/2+Metabones. I like the 100/2 a lot, but the AF can struggle in dim light, so if I can get a native solution that won't struggle in low light, it'd be great.

At 371 grams, that 85 looks intriguing, I like that it has a focus hold button on it...although, I'm not really excited about either...also, it seems weird that they are just now coming out with a 2.4Ghz Flash...Better late than never I suppose...

I'm shooting a catalog right now and I'm not real happy with my 85 1.4 focus speed.

I use the same combo, and would love to replace it. Will still use the MBIV with the 135. love having the extra button, that's a nice touch.

agree (if you mean that you weren't a fan of the batis 85 swirly bokeh, which is why i gave up on it and it's very easy to use form factor for the 85GM, which is a perfect IQ lens IMHO but i didn't want to heavy lugs right next to each other at 50 & 85)

each passing year now we have more and more focal lengths with a variety of options based on IQ, style preference, price, size/weight.
