Anyone heard of the brand Laowa? it's 105mm seems to be a budget alternative to the expansive Nikon 105mm F1.4!

Budget? Nikon 105 f2,5 Ai-S or any other flavor for $150

AF specs similar to that of the Laowa

And a proven trackrecord.

The one review I've seen looks positive:

I'm waiting to see how that yongnuo 100mm f2 lens is when it people start getting their hands on it. I'd expect it to be the budget alternative at less than $200 with AF.

DX shooters can always use the Sigma 50-100 f1.8 "A"
at the long end. Sharper wide open and quite brisk AF.
Probably won't qualify as budget, but it's ~1/2 the price.

Nikon 105/1.4 vs Laowa 105mm f/2 One is AF, the other is manual.

In a totally controlled environment with a static subject manual focus will work. In any other situation I don't see myself trying to pinpoint focus at f/1.4.

I am not a studio shooter, I don't shoot static subjects... Case closed!

It doesn't mean I own the Nikon. I wish I could afford it. My alternative is the Nikon 135mm f/2DC. The Nikon 105mm f/2DC and both Nikon 85mm are also valuable options.

I did a side-by-side comparo of my 105 2.5 AI vs. my 105 1.4E. IQ is much closer than the price difference suggests.

There just isn't one. The new nikon is one of the best performing lenses you can buy at the moment and unique it it's speed so you pay for it.

I guess that if you would take the 105mm f1,8 Ai-S in to that comparison that the new lens no longer looks all that attractive.

Not that it's a bad lens. But Nikon just made too many good 105mm lenses to really make f1,4 worth the added size, weight and price for a lot of users.

Nikon 105mm F2 DC is a good alternative that I own, also the 105mm 2.5 Ai-S is another good alternative that I own. Unless you want the 1.4 for the extreme sharpness the others are really good.

Without knowing what your actual budget number is, there is no way to really help you. You just won't get the results of the new 105 from a lesser priced lens. You might get close enough to be satisfied but only if it's in your budget.

Pretty much all other 105mm lenses can be considered budget options when compared to the 105mm f1.4E.
But then again, if you want f1.4 there really isn't any other options so you can say there are no alternatives to the 105mm f1.4E.
Just depends on your perspective.

An interesting comparison and an informative video, thanks for sharing. I'd be more interested in seeing the Laowa side by side with the 105 DC, and portraiture under different lighting conditions. I'm not really in the market for either at the moment (Already have 105 2.5P, 105 1.4E, and 135 DC), but would find it interesting to see how they compare.

A third party MF F1.8 or F1.4 105 lens makes little sense for me. Checkout the Nikkor AIS 105 F2.8 Micro. At least you wind up with Macro capability and some DOF for MF.

If you have a moment, I would love to see that. Would be a great and lasting treatment for GAS. I love my 105/2.5 AIS.

If you (and I presume you do) want AF then I'd say the 85/1.8 afs or the 105/2.8 macro VR are your alternatives Nikon wise.
