p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 80/90 slow alt lens for A7II

Hello everybody,

I know the portrait lenses have been discussed here before, but currently I'm having a hard time deciding what to do. Currently I have a C/Y 28/2.8 Distagon that is my most used lens, than the Sony 50/1.8 just to have a AF lens around, but I would gladly replace it with a 50/2 be it Leica or Zeiss on a TAP, and I have a Contax 90/2.8 that I don't like focusing at all, even with the Metabones adapter. OTOH I have a Mamiya 80/2.8 that I have not really used yet. While I like 90mm focal length, I don't want to spend a lot on a 90. Currently I am considering a Leica R 90 Elmarit or a M Tele-Elmarit or, but that would cost a lot more, a M Elmarit. Or maybe simply keep the Mamiya and shoot with it enjoying the big image circle... I checked the combination of lens and adapter and the 80/2.8 N with adapter weights pretty much the same as the Contax 90/2.8 with adapter.
Any toughs on these would be highly appreciated, since I try to prepare for this years holidays.

Regards, Stefan

What about the C/Y 85/2.8 Sonnar? Great quality in a small package and I think it's not that expensive either.

Excellent suggestion. I thought of the C/Y Sonnar 85/2.8 when I saw the thread title. Add a C/Y Planar 50/1.7 (since you don't seem to need f/1.4) and you'll have a nicely spaced Zeiss C/Y 28/50/85 set.

The C/Y 85/2.8 was the other lens I was thinking about, but they seem to go for about 300 EUR currently ant this is what got me thinking about using the Mamiya as short telephoto. I actually also have a 50 1.4 Planar around, not sure it is good since somebody seemed to have played around with it and damaged the focus helicoid. I could of course put all the C/Y lenses on the TAP with just one adapter. My main problem with the A7 until now was that all my lenses were going more or less beyond infinity and I hope to get better results with the TAP plus getting AF for portraits at the telephoto focal lengths.

Regards, Stefan

If a bit more size and weight don't bother you: the Leica R 90 f2.8 is fantastic in all respects. The built-in hood is also a nice feature I would like to have in all my lenses.

I'll also put my hat in for the C/Y 85/2.8. Optically, it's almost identical to your Contax G 90/2.8, but with a real focus ring.

Leica 90/4 Elmar-C is small, reasonably priced and has a nice rendering. :-)

I had the Elmar-C as well as the VC 90/3.5, but I was wondering how the Leica M and R offerings would compare to the Zeiss stuff and to the Mamiya 80/2.8N. I'm actually also playing with the idea of getting a Leica 135/4 since it is a pretty light weight 135 ( even if heavier than the two 80/90mm combinations that I already have ). On a side note : has anybody used the TAP with C/Y lenses ?

If not Sonnar 85/2.8 and Elmarit R 90/2.8,then there are many others, cheaper, yet very decent 85mm lenses:

1.Sonnar 85/2.8 HFT or not HFT in Rollei QBM mount
2.Rolleinar 85/2.8 MC (Mamiya made) in Rollei QBM mount
3.Nikkor 85/2.0 AI/S
4.Minolta Rokkor/Plain MD 85/2.0
5.Pentax M 85/2.0
6.Canon FD SSC/nFD 85/1.8
7.Zeiss Jena Biometar 80/2.8 for 6x6cm Pentacon Six
9.Earlier silver copies of Jupiter 9 85/2.0 (not dreamy, but just sharp)
10.Volna 80/2.8 for Pentacon Six/Kiev 66
11.OM Zuiko 85/2.0

And many more of 90-100-105-135mm that would fit.

It's actually not too difficult to rehouse the optics and aperture of the Contax 90/2.8 into a better manual helicoid. There's a lot of information about this in the lens modification thread, and @sebboh has provided CAD drawings of the parts he uses for conversions. Personally, I think the C/Y Sonnar 85 makes more sense, since it's the same optics in a small, MF-friendly package, but the modification has the upside of resulting in a native-mount lens or an M-mount lens if you want to use it on TAP. It can also be fun if you're into that sort of thing, and shouldn't cost you more than the price of a cheaper short tele.

It doesn't have to be an M-mount lens to be used on the TAP. In this case just a C/Y -> M adapter.

Yeah, I know. I was just saying there are options in the conversion of the G 90 for either a native e-mount lens or one that natively mounts to the TAP, so you don't have to mess with adapters.

My bad. I realised what you actually meant and came back to delete that post but you'd already replied.

Stefan, I have the Mamiya 2.8/80N and find it to be an excellent lens, very sharp, although a little purple fringing WO but this doesn't matter for portraits anyway. I find the Mamiya 1.9/80N nicer for portraits, I like it's colours and slightly harsh bokeh, but it's not as good a lens as the 2.8/80 overall. If I were you I would stick with the lens you already have, and if not happy with the results move on.

No worries. I often find myself posting clarifications, which means I should concentrate on being more thorough in my initial responses.

Why slow? CY 85/1.4 can be used slow if you fancy that. Prime build, prime IQ, prime bokeh, prime just about anything. A side note is that it is possibly the coolest alt lens being more or less a metal tube of glass. It's not that expensive either, I'd look for a MMJ/MMG.

The problem with the CY 85/1.4 is that it is a heavy beast. I had that lens at one point, and even paid duties for it even if it was mentioned on the lens that it was made in W Germany, but since I got it from Switzerland i had to pay ... But the problem with it is it's weight - it is more than double the 85/2.8. SO if the 85/2.8 is somewhere near the L90/2.8 E55 than I would try to source that one at a decent price.
My Mamiya 80/2.8 turned out to be defective in that the blades won't close regardless of what I do, so that one is out of contention right now, and if I'm buying another lens I would tend to either Zeiss or Leica.

Regards, Stefan

My first vote is also the C/Y Sonnar 2.8/85. One in the 8.xxx.xxx serial range, and MMG. They're out there.

However, if you want something neater, though rare, go for a C/Y Sonnar 3.5/100. Super compact. (See review here: https://phillipreeve.net/blog/review-zeiss-sonnar-t-100mm-f3-5-cy/ ) Again, I recommend finding one of the latter MMJ ones, probably in the mid 7.xxx.xxx serial range. The coating improvements help.

Another vote for the C/Y 85mm f/2.8, especially if you like the look of the Contax G 90mm. Almost the same lens, but in a real helicoid.
