For the past two winters the waves have washed away the sand in a patch south of Powerhouse Park on Delmar beach, exposing gorgeous striated rocks for a few weeks. In the 4 years I have lived in San Diego I have only seen these rocks exposed briefly in the past several days, and last year around this same time. You can only shoot this during low tide (around 0ft or negative) and it is best at sunset. The rocks are under water when the tide rises to ~1ft or above, and typically get buried by sand within a few weeks.

There is a window of a few days in late January/early February and a few more in August when you have both low tide and sunset at the same time. The past few days have been a wonderful window, and tomorrow is the last day that would likely be acceptable before the window of opportunity slams shut and the rocks get covered up. The weather forecast isn't great, there is a strong low pressure system in the Pacific that will clip SoCal tomorrow and the skew-T charts suggest pretty heavy marine layer 40 miles out at sea, but hey what do you have to loose by showing up? Both this year and last I have been there pretty much every day when the conditions are even remotely good and have never seen another tripod. Given the significant crowds that walk this beach that is a surprise, but not one I am going to complain about.

Maybe I see some of you there tomorrow, I will be the only other person with a tripod for miles in either direction :-)

Tonight was pretty good. There was a crack in the marine layer where the sun set and it was a decent opportunity. Next shot at this is Feb 13-14 assuming that it does ot get covered by sand till then. It is Feb 28 Mar 1 after that. PM me if you want more details on the location.

I am going to be in San Diego Feb. 28-Mar. 4th. What are some good landscape areas within a short drive, or what are some picturesque city locations to shoot?

There have been a number of threads on this topic in the past few months, I have provided detailed responses to some of them, many others have chimed in too. You can look through my posting history and/or search this forum.
