I bought a used D300 with 16,000 shots on it for my nephew who is interested in photography.
Tried it out and it seemed fine. I took a test shot on the owner's memory card and plugged it into my computer to verify the shutter count. Clicked a few more and everything looks good on the camera display.
When he got home from using it for the first time today and tried to view the files on his computer most of them are seriously flawed.
New Lexar Professional 8gb CF card
A "Treefrog" branded USB 3 card reader. Also new.

What do you gents (and ladies) think?

Faulty new card ?
Faulty POS card reader?
Sensor or something else failing with camera?
Or ?

Thanks for looking!!

I vote memory card. I've had garbage like this from Lexar Pro SD cards. On the up side, Lexar is really good about replacing cards.

Or in-camera card reader/writer. These are the symptoms I've had in three of my D70x cameras. Sensors were never the issue.

Could be a card, but more likely a reader or cable. Try using a different card. If it screws up on the second card that eliminates the card.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
He is going to purchase another card tomorrow and give it a try.
I think he has another card reader lined up to try as well.

cheers,
max

Try connecting the camera directly to the computer for upload and see what you get

Make sure you're formatting the card in the camera not the card reader as well. The memory card is always the first suspect with these sort of cases but it can also be the sensor. New sensor on a D300 is around $500-600 and more than the camera is worth so hopefully it's not that.

I had this problem few months ago and that was due to faulty memory card reader.

It looks to me like you have a bad seal on the camera and the film got fogged.

If I had to guess the "Treefrog" branded USB 3.0 card reader. It just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the items in the bundle.

Get a name brand one as the generic ones are a hit or miss thing.

Thanks again for the replies gentlemen.

Totally my fault. In my rush and enthusiasm (and a few Christmas cocktails) to give him his first DSLR lesson, I failed to format the new card in the D300. Blush.
There is a very slight chance that it was the Lexar card.
He bought a different card and formatted it. He is still hoping to salvage a few images that appear ok on the Lexar card.
Not a great chance of that happening, but he won't try to reformat the Lexar card until he tries.

So, I think CanadaMark hit it on the head.
And the others that said 'memory card' should finish on the podium too.

Edit- Impact Damage may also be correct. I have taken a few blows to the head- so that may have caused me to forget to format the new card, So runamuck is up for the bronze.

He just sent me this pic taken with the new card and my trusty old 50mm 1.8 on the D300.
Pretty darn steady for a new guy at 1/40th of a second!
