p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A7ii or a6500 for traveling to Asia

I am planning to travel to Asia (South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan). I am not sure what's the better body to travel with. Just need something a lot lighter than my Canon 5D Mark 3 and Sigma 50mm 1/4 Art.
I have a budget for roughly $1300-1400 body only. And roughly $600-800 on lens.
I am planning to shoot landscape and street photograph. 4k is a optional thing, but not required since 1080p still looks great.

Why not the 28mm or 35 2.8?

I would go with a used A7R and both the 28f2 and the 35f2.8. I've used this combination a lot for street photos and it works great. Landscapes are also very nice. You will notice a big difference in weight and bulk compared to your 5D3 and Sigma lens.

Man, I dunno, if you want to go tiny and light an A6500 plus Sigma 19 f/2.8 dn and 30 f/1.4 dn (maybe not so tiny and light) and even 60 f/2.8 dn might be a great choice. I don't have an A6500 but do have an A6300 plus A7II and A7R2 and 55 f/1.8 and 28 f/2. The A6000 series is noticeably smaller and lighter. And the A6500 will have more functionality than the A7II. The sensor in at least the A6300 is pretty darn terrific for a crop cam and the 6500 sensor is supposed to be even better I believe. If you do go full frame, I'd try and take the 28 + 55 combo. I love both those lenses. Great all arounders and they make a great pair. I also have the 35 f/2.8 and just can't seem to come to grips with it but of course everybody's got their prefered focal lengths. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

If 10 people post their opinion, you will get almost 10 different answers. Gear selection is personal and it depends on how you like to do your photography. Street shooting - well, do you like your images to be on the tight side, isolating more the target or show the surrounding? Landscape - wide or not necessarily wide. You can actually stitch 3-5 images taken with a standard lens to get a wider view. Ultimately, you have to make the call yourself. Get familiar with the gear of your choice, be creative and make it work. I hope this doesn't come across as condescending, which is not but asking what gear to take is, well, you will get more confused .

I know gear selection is hard since everyone has a different style to how to shoot. I heard the a6500 does what the a7ii and more such as 4k. But the a7ii has custom buttons which is great for quick selection.

As for len selection, I know crop and full frame lens are different in focal length, so that is why I need to be mindful of which one. I know 35mm some people feel it is a 55mm and that is why people love the 28 and 55 combo, since it spreads the distances even more.

Yep, that's one of the reasons I like the 28-55 combo. I've even been surprised how much I enjoy shooting people with the 28. Ive lately been using it for stitched landscapees as part of my light grab and go kit. Good results...

Depending on your timeframe to get the purchases done I would look into renting some camera and lens combinations if that exists in a city near where you live. Experiement a little and see what YOU like.

I stayed in Hong Kong for a week.

The streets were much narrower than typical Western streets.

If you watch some of the reviews by digital rev you will get an idea of how narrow it can be for street photography.

If I were taking my a6300, I would probably pack my Sony 10-18.

Since you shoot canon, maybe you already have some wide(ish) Canon lenses? If so you might benefit from getting a Canon to E Mount adapter.

Probably by this upcoming December there will be a couple of updates / new models of Canon to E Mount lenses. Or, the way that Sony releases camera bodies, the new a6700 or a6900 will already be available.

Oh, and 1080p on the a6300 and a6500 series isn't all that great. I would definitely suggest shooting at 4K and then downsampling to 1080p (or, better yet, just keeping it at 4K because we will all be using 4K monitors in about 3 years anyway...)

I been to Hong Kong and Macau couple of years back. I love it over there. I am very torn between another FF, but lighter or go back to crop sensor and adapt the lenses. Doesn't adapting full frame glass give it a bit of vignetting?

Landscapes and street. Well, landscapes are about the most demanding on equipment, and what focal lengths - 50mm only? If so, hard to beat a7II and FE55, it's my stock lens, does maybe 35-40%.

5D3 (945g) and Sigma ART (815g) = not much back from 2 kgs.
Sony a7II (600g) and FE55 (280g) = 880 grams.

Not just light, much smaller and discreet. The 55mm is excellent for street work / people. Easy decision.

I said A7II + 55 because of your current setup with the 5Dm3 and 50/1.4.

If discreet and full frame is what you're after, the 35 is a great choice. The 28 is about the same size, and very good stopped down, plus a stop faster, but I never took to that lens after owning it twice.

My favorite lens on the A7II is the Batis 25, but that puts you over budget (though not by much).

Given your budget and starting from scratch, I'd probably opt for an A6000, 16-70 Zeiss, and the 24/1.8.

Which of the 55mm would you recommend? the Sony Zeiss 50 or FE 55mm?

For close to the total you want to spend you could pick up a used RX1Rii, which would be the ultimate size/performance combo, assuming you were ok with the 35mm focal length. Or an older rx1 for around $1k or so.

a6300 and Batis 25/2 (best crop IQ)
a6500 and 28/2 (smallest package but packs a PUNCH)
a7II and 55/1.8 (best FF option I think)
Just know that the E lenses aren't weather and dust resistant, so you'll probably want an FE lens.

Make sure to get out of the big cities, the further out you get, the more "interesting" things get.

I'd still suggest the FE 55. Both are fantastic, but the price and size, in my opinion, is not worth the very slight increase in IQ.
