What's your lightweight travel setup?

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What's your lightweight travel setup?

I'm going to be taking a (probably) once in a lifetime trip to Thailand that has me going crazy over what gear to take with me as I bounce around. The purpose of the trip isn't photography, but obviously I'll be wanting to do some shooting. When traveling with m4/3 my go to setup has been the E-M5 MKI, 12mm f/2, 20mm f/1.7 and 45mm f/1.8. All tiny lenses with nice IQ and a useful range. I may upgrade my camera or get the 75mm for this trip, not sure yet.

What do you pack when you want to travel light and fast from place to place?

Your setup/kit is already very small ... so what's your problem? An Olympus 12-40 PRO or a Panasonic 12-35 would be even better ... or even the Olympus or Panasonic 12-42 kit lens.

Good time to buy Olympus lenses because of the instant rebate:

Yeah, that's a pretty small setup as it is. I agree on the 12-40f2.8. It'll replace all three of those lenses. You might want to consider one of the slower zooms to get you into some telephoto ranges as well.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't super clear. I'm happy with the kit I have, it works well for me, despite being tempted by every new piece of gear that comes out.

I was wondering what other people use for their minimalist set ups when traveling. Mostly just curious.

My "minimalist" set-up just means that I will leave my 300 PRO behind and take all the others!

Panasonic 7-14
Olympus 12-40 PRO
Olympus 75/1.8

Nocticron 42.5/1.2
Olympus 40-150 PRO
Olympus MC-14
Olympus 60 Macro

If push comes to shove, I may leave the 40-150 + MC-14 + 60 macro behind ... and maybe the Nocticron also!

I haven't taken any trips yet with my newly-acquired Olympus kit, but I can see taking one camera body and two lenses to cover just about everything that I'd be interested in shooting: E-M1.2, 12-100, and PL 100-400.

To Thailand?

How about just a 25mm lens?
https://www.dpreview.com/articles/5176821860/i-went-to-thailand-with-an-olympus-e-m1-mark-ii-and-one-lens

With your current gear, if you want lightweight, I would just take the 12 f2 and 45 1.8.

My M4/3 camera wouldn't be my first choice for traveling light but I would like to take it as a second camera if possible.

Awesome. Since you don't need it, you can sell me the 40-150/2.8 .

For lightweight travel when photography is not the primary reason - either of these two:

Fuji X-E2 with 18-135 plus 14mm, or EM-1 with 14-150 plus 12mm.

EM-1.2 and the 12-100
That would cover a lot of range and keeps my sensor clean :-)

I cover the 25 to 100 range with a zoom or two, not with primes.

I saw that link last night in my Google feed. I've been back and forth on the E-M1 MKII for this trip and then that popped up, sneaky sneaky internet trying to open my wallet. I should figure out which of my lenses are weather sealed...it might matter for this trip.

Olympus 25/1.2
Nocticron 42.5/1.2

Do it man. No regretted on my part when I got those lenses. I would go for Oly 12. I don't like Pana for the plasticly feel.

Depends on where I am going:

EP5 9-18, Pany 35-100 f4-56.
Or Pany 14 & 35-100 f4-5.6

For video:
Gx8 9-18 or 12-35 & PL100-400
or 9-18 or 12-35 & 35-100 for in town.

I spent a month in Thailand with my Lumix GX1, and 14mm, 30mmm and 40-150mm lenses. That worked out very well

If I was going again, I would change it it 12-35mm, and 40-150mm, and my Lumix GX8

There is no 12/1.2 ... not yet anyway. Olympus will release more fast primes, so hopefully there is a 12/1.2 PRO in their road map.
