p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Lens upgrade opinions

I have been using a Nikon 55-300 VR on my D7000 for about 4 years now and while I have been quite pleased with its performance, I am thinking I would like to upgrade a bit. This has been the lens I have taken probably 2/3 of all my pictures with and unless I have a specific reason to use a different lens, it lives on camera.

I live in Alaska and want to be able to take advantage of any wildlife opportunities that may occur literally at any time. I like to walk and go for hikes so I want a lens that doesn't demand a tripod for good results. I have considered the latest rendition of the Nikon 80-400 VR. The Nikon 200-500 looks like a great value but seems a bit big for handholding though on a monopod it might not be too bad.

I don't really plan on upgrading my D7000 at this point as it still functions wonderfully and only has about 25K actuations on it.

Any thoughts?

Having zero experience with either one, I really haven't. I'm hoping for feedback from people who have used them and can comment accordingly. I have never shot with a lens as big as either of the ones I mentioned and very well might be completely in left field as to my thinking (wouldn't be the first time!).

The Nikon 80-400mm AFS is a nice size.

The 80-400 is an excellent lens. If the 200-500 seems too big for you, then the 80-400 is the answer.

If you can get both in your hands and see which feels better. Also consider adding a 1.4x TC to either option.

On a crop camera I'd go for the 80-400. With the DX crop factor you're looking at a 120-600mm (equivalent) lens. Just my 2 cents.

If you don't want a zoom the 300 F4 is nice.

This might be of interest: AF speed: 300 PF w/TC14EIII vs 200-500

Bunch of pretty positive comments for the 300 PF and the 1.4x TC

Your problem here is not max focal length, it's what range works best for you.

The 200-500mm might be somewhat limiting on a D7000 on the short end since you're starting with an effective focal length of 300mm

With the Nikon 80-400mm AF-S VR you are looking at 120mm on the short end with that camera.

And of course, the 300mm pf is starting with the full frame equivalent of 450mm

So, my question is where do you shoot most wildlife?
Do animals pop out of the woods right in front of you, like 10 yards away? Or do you get most shots across a field, at a distance? Or are you trying to fill a frame with a bird?

At the long end, the Nikon 80-400mm works best within reasonable distances, perhaps up to 30-50 yards. The strength of the 200-500mm is at 500mm and longer distances.

What would I do? I would somehow try both together, then see which works best for you and your typical shooting conditions. You probably don't want a bunch of head shots at 500mm or even 200mm if the critter is close...

Financially, I would be aware that the 80-400mm is a very expensive lens when buying new. Not just the overall new price, but the cliff it drops off of IMMEDIATELY due to the out-the-door depreciation. If that doesn't bother you - great, otherwise I'd look for a used copy. The 200-500mm only falls off the curb with it's depreciation. It's resale value is only a few hundred less than new.

I personally love my 80-400mm lens. It's very compact, has Nanocoating, and very sharp...

^ +1, what he said. What I would do is look through the pictures that you have taken with your 55-300 and see what focal lengths your shots are usually take at. You may realize you have a Bell curve (or not) and then that would drive which lens to get.

Most of my shots are between 200 and 300mm.

When I first purchased my 200-500 I tried it on my d7000 which was my first Nikon I was impressed with the photos I got shooting animals in my neighborhood only shot jpegs but they were sharp. Since purchasing d500 ,the lens lives on there. For awhile I had it on a D7100 which was also very good but the new focus system locks on wildlife so much better.

Rent an 80-400 and then a 200-500 from lensrentals.com. See which works better for you.
