p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Anyone use the 1.7 extender with the 300mm F4 PF VR?

Does anyone have any experience with this combo on a D810 or D7200. I just bought a 300mm vr on ebay and it came with the 1.7 extender. I own the 1.4 and wonder if keeping the 1.7 is worthwhile? Thanks, Jim

I have the 300 pf on my Nikon D500 and use it often with the TC 1.4x II and get exceptional results. I purchased a used TC 1.7x II and gave it a try. Results were mixed as far as sharpness and initial focus acquisition. If I was very careful with a static subject I could on occasion get acceptable results but my keeper rate was too low compared to the 1.4x so I returned it.

Only thing I can add is that it is excellent on the AF-S f4. Can't say about the PF version.

It was ok sharpness wise on the D810 and focus was slowed considerably over the 1.4x. The 2x worked pretty decent as well if you could handle f8 or higher.

I have found that the 1.7x and the 2x focus a bit faster with the new AF system on the D500 and D5.

The good thing I found about the D810 is that you can shoot the 300pf with the 1.4x tele and have a lot of pixels left over to crop into the equivalent FOV of the larger converters as long as you keep your ISO reasonable. My 1.4x pretty much stays glued to the 300pf.

I have the 1.4 and I'm extremely happy with results. I'm pondering if I should keep the 1.7
or dispose of it and reduce the acquisition cost of the lens? If the combo worked well, I would keep it, Thanks for your reply!

The 1.4 is excellent with this combination, with little, if any, effect on IQ. The 1.7 is not quite on the same level but is still, IMO, within acceptable bounds. Not so as to the 2.0, which I do not consider usable with this lens. Like others, the 1.4 is "glued" to the lens and only comes off for the 1.7. For me, it is superior to the 200-500.

You think that 1.7 is superior to the 200mm-500mm? That's pretty damn good!

I would like to see some evidence that the 300mm PF + 1.7 is better than the 200-500.

I've used the lens with the 1.7 and it is fine. I used the 1.7 extensively with the older AF-S version of the 300mm f/4. What I've found, though, is that the 1.4x is so good (edit: for clarity, I mean the 1.4x III combined with the PF lens) that I don't see a big need to use the 1.7 - I can crop a little and not lose as much focus speed or the extra light.

I have the original 1.4 tc together with the 1.7. I at one stage had the 300mm f2.8 vr11 and found with both that lens and the 300mm pf the 1.7 was better than the 1.4. It may be that my 1.4 is not such a good copy. Hopefully a couple of images will illustrate the point.

I found that the TC-14E II was better than the TC-17E II, but only by a little bit, and it definitely wasn't better to crop the 1.4 than it was to shoot with the 1.7 (at least, in terms of pure sharpness).

The TC-14E III on the 300mm PF, though, is virtually as sharp as the bare lens. It's to the point where, with the old TCs, I used to remove them if I didn't need the additional focal length because there was a meaningful sharpness improvement with the bare lens. With the PF and TC III, I only pull the teleconverter off if I really need the additional stop of light because there's almost no difference in sharpness.

Example of the 300mm PF with the TC III:
