p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Which Gitzo Traveller: 1555t, 1545t or 2545t?

Hi,
I am looking to buy one of these, a bit confused.

Information that i collected:
These are Gitzo's latest in traveller range and the 1555 is a new entrant, with 5 section legs and just 35xm folded.
1545 is like the older 1541 and 1542t. 4 sections.
2545 is series 2 traveller.

I am looking for a compact set of legs but not too weak. I am leaning towards series 2 traveller, 1.3 kgs and 17 inch folded.

My lenses: 100-400 ii, 16-35 f4 are my biggest lenses.

I am looking for feedback from any series 2 traveller user and any user who favoured series 1 traveller over 2.

There are no reviews of 5 section 1555 on web, any users here?

Thanks,
Nde

I check reviews from owners on places like B&H Photo Video. In my experience the Gitzo load ratings are to be trusted. I have had problems with pieces breaking and difficulty in getting replacement parts with the newer models.

The series two weighs under 3 lbs and is more likely to be of use in the future should you buy or rent heavier lenses.

I prefer 3 section legs as it is faster to setup the tripod and to take it down. 4 sections are a necessary concession for a more compact tripod for air travel but 5 sections would be too much of a pain and no real gain over a 4 section that I can think of for use in the field or for taking on a plane.

I use an ultra-light Gitzo GT-0540 CF with a 6D and lenses up to the 100-400L IS II, when I want a minimum-weight kit, and a tabletop tripod is too small. It's rated for 5 kg and it works fine. It doesn't provide as much stability as a heavier tripod, but it's certainly a lot more steady than handheld shooting. Normally I use a Feisol Traveler CT-3441S for travel (with up to 500/4L IS).

I'd recommend saving some cash and getting the Feisol CT-3441T (or S). The T is a custom build that was originally sourced by reallybigcameras.com. http://reallybigcameras.com/Feisol/Tall_Traveler.htm
http://reallybigcameras.com/Feisol/Tripods

Gitzo has been falling out of grace....see the other thread about their customer service lower down on the General Gear board.

If I was going to spend Gitzo type $ I'd look at the RRS 14 series instead for equal or better quality and decent CS .http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/Tripods-Monopods/CarbonFiberTripods/Series-1-Tripod

I might be in the market for a new travel tripod as well. Currently, have the MeFoto Roadtrip, which is awesome but a bit on the heavy (aluminum) and long side (when folded) for true backpacking, which I plan to do in Scandinavia and Italy later in the year.

Since the primary use on these trips would be long exposures of still landscapes/city at night, the lens of choice will most likely be the Canon 16-35 f/4, with my 5dm3. Total combined weight of this combo is about four pounds, which is 50% of the rated load for the MeFoto Backpacker, which I am considering due to the folded length of about 12 inches.

By the way, using my Mindshift Firstlight backpack. I usually keep the tripod in the cup holes on the side, but don't want to keep it that way since the backpack will be my carry-on luggage. Too bulky. Would prefer to put the tripod inside the bag.

I have used a Gitzo Series 1 Traveler for several years now. It is rated for up to 17 pounds and more importantly it is high enough, fully extended, that I (I am 5' 9" tall), that I don't have to stoop to use it. I have the short center pole so that I can hook a weight to it if needed. It is four section I believe. I use it with a 100-400 II and a 16-35 F4 IS and it is plenty sturdy enough. The only downside is, even though it is made of 6X Carbon fiber, in the field you look like a rank amateur with one of those flimsy aluminum K-Mart tripods. Oh well as you get older you lose your pride.

I do that on my Ajna with a RRS TQC/TFC-14. hasn't been an issue. if it becomes one remove it and carry by hand.
in japan (NRT) on the way out I had my TQC inside my then Loka and the security personnel had me remove it they measured it and claimed it was by their standards oversized. I asked what was the limit and then proceeded to dismantle it till it made them happy. then right in front of them I reassembled it and walked away with a smile and them just a bit dumbfounded. the one and only time (and there have been multiple trips) it occurred and it was inside a legal carry on item.

How did they disassemble it? Like take off a ball head or something or where they unscrewing leg sections?? Seems really odd thing to do if it already fits in a legal carryon bag

I have the older 1541T which I used with my 100-400L when I used to own it. It was stable enough to see Jupiter or Saturn. My Mamiya RZ67 lives on it now mostly and it is quite stable even with a Markins Q3t ball head.
If I was to get the tripod again I think I would look at RRS ones but the Gitzo legs were on sale for sub 500 back then.

I've taken it all over traveling even on budget planes inside a 20L eastpack w/ 5d mk III, and three lenses, and 13" mbp , in Europe recently.

It went through the X-ray and they saw it. Then they got interested and then requested me remove it. they ruler measured it and from there it became an exercise in making them happy. I took off the center post as its head was already off to begin with. Then I pulled off each foot. I was even waiting to have to pull off at least the lower leg tubes but that didn't occur.for them it was the letter of the law thing. Stripping it down is simple.

Arbitrage,
I did check them out. Feisol is almost similar, assuming similar materials and build quality as Girzo.
But Gitzo has lesser folded length. 35cm for series 1. Even series 2 which is supposed to be sturdier has lesser folded length. Feisol has longer extended length though.
Let me see if these are available in my country.
Surprisingly less users of Traveller series 2. Everyone seems to buy series 1.

I think the S version and not the T version should be almost exactly like the Gitzo. but I haven't looked for sure. The T version is taller which is nice but of course that means the folded length is a bit longer. Maybe the S is still longer??

I've used my Feisol with a 1DX and 600II/2xTCIII so it has no issues with weight. You do need a good head for that sort of weight. But for smaller lenses it will do just fine even with a more compact ball head.

I have the 3441T because I'm 6'3" I wanted the taller version. It is still way shorter than my RRS 34L but good enough.

I have a series 2 traveler:
Gitzo GK2580TQR Series 2 Traveler

https://www.amazon.com/Gitzo-GK2580TQR-Traveler-Kit-Tripod/dp/B002DYJ0UM/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1485300320&sr=8-18&keywords=gitzo+traveler

Gitzo rates it for use up to a 200mm focal length. They are conservative so I think it would be at least OK with your 100-400 lens. I use it with my 70-200 + 1.4x (280mm) frequently with good results.

For me it was about getting one tripod that was small and light enough to pack and carry yet big enough to handle a telephoto lens when I need it. I have had this thing all over the world because it fits easily in a carry on, hangs easily on my backpack and the holds my 6D without vibration for 30 seconds. I have a bigger tripod but it stays home collecting dust.

There might be cheaper units that will do the same thing, but I doubt it.

Amazon lists Gitzo's in new and used versions, used = like new with all packaging etc intact

Anyone ever bought used items? Incase of a tripod, it may work....price starts from 499 US

I would say it depends on who the seller is. If it's Amazon used, might be OK. But if it's third-party, be careful unless it's a reputable seller.

Which tripod are you looking to buy? I'm debating between the 1545 and 1555 as well. I like that the 1555 folds down to 14 inches, but the 1545 is a bit taller. Only downside is that the 1545 folds down longer than my Mefoto RoadTrip. But the 1555 is five sections, which seems cumbersome but maybe not.

Decisions decisions
