p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tamron 150-600mm G2 Lens Images

Here are a few of my initial images with the Tamron G2 150-600mm. These were all handheld with the Nikon D500 at 600mm wide open at f/6.3. The most signficant advantage of the Tarmon over the Nikon 200-500mm is an extra 100mm of reach and 50mm on the wide end. The Tamron is also able to acquire initial focus a tad faster than the Nikon in good light, however, that advantage dissipates in poor light. The advantage of the Nikon is very slight sharper IQ and better ability to maintain focus during tracking. However, for me the bottom line is 600mm is 600mm and Tamron has delivered a very nice lens at a reasonable price. Will add more photos later.

Wow, gorgeous images. I especially like the first two.

I'm considering getting the G2.

Thanks. G2 not a bad lens.

This was posted over at the D500 thread as well.

D500 + Tamron 150-600 G2 (borrowed for evaluation). It is a very impressive lens.

Osprey came and landed nearby and proceeded to have a bath in the surf!

1) 1/500s f/8.0 at 550.0mm iso160

2) 1/320s f/8.0 at 600.0mm iso110

3) 1/1250s f/8.0 at 460.0mm iso400

4) 1/800s f/8.0 at 600.0mm iso280

5) 1/800s f/8.0 at 600.0mm iso280

One thing I'm noticing in shots from the G2 lens vs. the G1 lens- backgrounds aren't rendered as busy, something that always bothered me on the G1 lens but Sigma was able to tame on their 150-600 variants.

Very nice to see that!

Hey Joe and Lance!
Absolutely great shots from either of you.
You make me lust after this combination quite a bit.
I really pondering getting the d500 soon in Nippon, perhaps even used.
So far my longest lens is the Nikon 80-400 af-s, and of course this is just
having this big reach-advantage. The Nikon would be ideal for the lighter travelling though.
I also ponder over the new 70-200fl and think I got to use the opportunity to get it first,
since the price is really much much better in Japan than at my place. Need this for horse racing
photography as the most versatile lens quite urgently.

Thanks, Lance's work rocks. Don't know much about horse racing photography. Too early for me to recommend the Tamron G2 for tracking. Below is a heavily cropped image displaying some tracking ability of the Tamron. What I can say is the D500 is a superb action DSLR and the 80-400g is a very good nice and versatile lens - particularly in good light. Glad you have access to decent pricing.

Those are very sharp pictures wide open! Did you fine tune your copy OR it came like that?

Lens seems sharp enough. No fine tuning as of yet. Haven't shot enough to know what adjustments are necessary. By the way I've got plenty of unsharp images as I develop my 900mm technique.

So, I was photographing a Red-billed Leiothrix in the shade at 460mm, auto iso, f/6.3 1/80 sec to test out Tamron's VC mode 3 (tried to keep iso as low as possible). Suddenly, the sun came out for a moment and I took the first shot which is nice and sharp at iso 500. Then the little bird decided to show off its Exorcist-like head spin technique resulting in the the second shot. Always a joy to have things happen unexpectedly.

I haven't ventured off into Tamron land for quite some time. Had a bad experience with their 28-300 and left it at that. But it looks like they may have turned the corner ala Sigma. Guess I'll call the B&M's and see if I can try one out. Its low weight is definitely a plus.
